Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first line of the song opens with "I was born in the ______ of a travellin' show". What is the missing word?

Answer: Wagon

The scene is set in the opening verse:

"I was born in the wagon of a travellin' show"
2. What did "Papa" do to earn his keep?

Answer: All of these choices

"Papa would do whatever he could
Preach a little gospel, sell a couple of bottles of Doctor Good"

In the final verse, we find "Grandpa" is also hocking the same wares. An alternate view of this line is that "Papa" is now "Grandpa" due to the events that overtake the singer during the song.
3. When "Mama" danced, what did the crowd do?

Answer: Threw money

"I was born in the wagon of a travellin' show
My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw"

Shake it, Mama! Let it all hang out!
4. Who or what would "come around" every night?

Answer: Men

"But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down"

I always found this line a bit disturbing in its inference, as I presumed it didn't mean they were gambling...
5. Where were they "just south of" when they "picked up a boy"?

Answer: Mobile

"Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal"
6. Apart from giving "a ride" to the boy they picked up, what else did they give him?

Answer: A meal

"Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal"

Hmmm, clearly, as the song progressed, that was not all the boy got! Refer question #10!
7. "How old is the singer of the song when the boy is "picked up"?

Answer: 16

"Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was sixteen, he was twenty-one
Rode with us to Memphis
And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done"
8. How old is the boy who was "picked up"?

Answer: 21

"Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was sixteen, he was twenty-one
Rode with us to Memphis
And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done"
9. What sort of weapon is vaguely referred to in the song?

Answer: Gun

"Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was sixteen, he was twenty-one
Rode with us to Memphis
And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done"

That, or a shotgun wedding, had the young man stayed around!
10. Towards the end of the song we find our heroine has become pregnant. Presumably in part because of the boy's "smooth southern style". What euphemism does she use to describe her condition?

Answer: I'm a gal in trouble

"Rode with us to Memphis
And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done"

and

"Three months later I'm a gal in trouble
And I haven't seen him for a while"

The motto of the story? This is why your parents always say "Don't give 'rides' to strangers"...
