Question 15 of 15
15. Ok a question on my favourite band which is probably not that easy for most of you. What is the name of this band well known for its remake of the traditional song 'Loch Lomond', had UK hits with 'Hearthammer' 'The Greatest Flame' and 'An Ubhal As Airde (The Highest Apple)', their most recent album is called 'The Stamping Ground' but the two most successful albums were 'Amazing Things' and 'The Big Wheel', they lost lead singer Donnie Munro in 1997 and was subsequently replaced by the Canadian Bruce Guthro, they're from Scotland and sing in both English and Gaelic, they have been consistently popular since the late 70s early 80s, in 1991 they did a ground-breaking concert by Loch Lomond (in Balloch Park) which holds the record for being the fastest ever selling concert in Scotland, they are also have a large fan base in Germany and Denmark. I've tried to give as many hints as I can :-D. I'm not absolutely convinced that will be enough though!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year was Bruce Hornsby's 'The Way It Is' a UK Top 20 Hit?

Answer: 1986

Tupac later sampled the distinctive piano part on his song, 'Changes'.
2. Who sang 'Smalltown Boy'?

Answer: Bronski Beat

The vocalist of this now disbanded band is male, despite the very falsetto voice. (I thought for ages that it was a woman!).
3. Who originally made 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'?

Answer: Procol Harum

The interesting thing about Procol Harum is that they pretty much appeared out of nowhere with this highly succesful song. It was later covered by Annie Lennox (not Eurythmics) and possibly (but I'm not sure) by Van the Man too.
4. Complete the title of this song: Alive and ...?

Answer: Kicking

Excellent song, probably still played by Simple Minds on current tours.
5. The song 'Kiss From A Rose' featured in Batman was sung by whom?

Answer: Seal

Definitely Seal!
6. Which of the following songs was a 1973 hit for John Martyn?

Answer: 'Solid Air'

Solid Air is the only real one of those, as far as I know. I just made up the other three.
7. Which country is the band 'Big Country' from?

Answer: Scotland

All Scots, so ironic name really. Excellent band of which the lead singer Stuart Adamson recently comitted suicide in Hawaii. They had actually disbanded before that but this means that they have now permanently stopped.
8. What U2 starts with the following lyric: 'See the stone set in your eyes, See the thorn twist in your side' (no capital letters)?

Answer: with or without you

One of the songs that helped make 'The Joshua Tree' a highly successful album.
9. Who was with Annie Lennox in Eurythmics?

Answer: Dave Stewart

Technically, if one is pedantic, I should say 'who IS with Annie Lennox in Eurythmics' since after all they are a band again...So I apologise! But I'm used to Annie Lennox being on her own :-).
10. Which of the following artists is not from Ireland?

Answer: Karen Matheson

Karen Matheson is from Oban, Scotland and is with the band Capercaillie. Maire Brennan is with celtic band Clannad. Enya is a New Age-pseudo celtic artist in her own right. And well, from the name one could deduce that Sinead O'Connor is Irish!
11. Where is the band that sang 'Old Apartment', 'If I Had A Million Dollars' and 'It's All Been Done' from (Hard Hint: an artist called Bruce Guthro is from the same country)?

Answer: Canada

The band is the Barenaked Ladies. Bruce Guthro is a singer-songwriter from Nova Scotia who is moderately well heard of in Canada. He is also the front man for Scottish Celtic rock band Runrig.
12. Van Morrison's song 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' has something in common with which classic English children's book?

Answer: Wind In The Willows

I can't stand the book but the song is Ok. It is supposed to be a great classic (the book) but it's just about some animals who have been personified as far as I can see!
13. Ok, a moderately easy one. What band sang 'Hotel California'?

Answer: The Eagles

Classic 'country rock' or even 'folk rock' ballad. There is an excellent live version that starts out only with an acoustic guitar and some percussion but gradually builds up to full strength.
14. Film music now. Tan Dun composed basically the entire score, cellist Yo-Yo Ma did a lot of cello solos and Coco Lee sang the theme tune. Name the film.

Answer: CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON

A film well worth seeing, better in Mandarin than in English even. The score is very good with Yo-Yo Ma's superb cello solos. And Coco Lee sounds great on 'A Love Before Time' in both Mandarin and English.

Answer: Runrig

Well I think I said all the basics that are to be said about Runrig! Except they're a Celtic band with a wide selection of styles including: gaelic psalms, gaelic rock, folk rock, ballads, celtic rock, 'atmospheric celtic', celtic dance music, traditional folk...And so on!
