Question 2 of 10
2. Jane's Addiction was an incredibly gifted band of the late 1980's and 1990's. "Ritual de lo Habitual" was a great album that had the MTV hit "Been Caught Stealing" as the signature single. My question pertains to the fact that there were two CD covers for this effort. The second one released had a solid white front and back (ala The Beatles "White Album"). What was so disturbing on the first release that it had to be censored? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Who can forget the video by Faith No More with the dying fish at the end? The song was "Epic" and the CD was "The Real Thing" released in 1989. There was one cover song (a song originally recorded by another band) on this album. Name it. Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. I could make 100 quizzes dedicated to the awesome Canadian band Rush. However, I need to write one question based on the "A Farewll To Kings" CD. One of the marvelous facets of Rush was the visual approach taken by the band in their CD covers. This particular cover shows a brilliant blue sky in the background with a crumbled building as the central theme. What eye catching item is also in the foreground of this cover? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Cameron Crowe is responsible for numerous movies based on pop culture. "Almost Famous" is a great movie based on his own life as a teenage writer for "Rolling Stone" magazine. He also directed a movie titled "Singles" which is meant as a reflection of the Seattle grunge scene in the early 1990's. The soundtrack from this movie includes an array of musicians ranging from Alice In Chains to Heart to Jimi Hendrix. My question involves the one band featured on this CD that is not from Seattle. Who is it? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. I have a simple question about one of the best CDs released in the 1990's from one of the most intelligent bands out there. Tool released "Aenima" in 1996 as a follow up to the hugely successful "Undertow". In the CD booklet for "Aenima" there is a painting titled "Another Dead Hero" by Bill Hicks. What is featured in this painting? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. I don't know if any of you have followed the real life soap opera that is Van Halen. First David Lee Roth is dismissed, then Sammy Hagar is fired, and then Gary Cherone is let go after only one album. The CD I happened to pull out of the closet is the incredible 1982 release "Diver Down". Seeing that CD makes me wonder how many Van Halen CD's were released by Roth and Hagar respectively prior to Cherone joining the group. Do you know? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. In 1991, Guns N' Roses put out a 2-disc set entitled "Use Your Illusion 1 & 2". I think that the musicianship established on these CDs could have laid a foundation for great things in the future. Alas, the group split up leaving Axl Rose to find replacements for all the bandmembers. My question actually pertains to the recent (September 2002) apearance of the newly assembled Guns N' Roses on the MTV Video Music Awards. What was that crazy head gear the guitarist was wearing? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Pearl Jam's debut "Ten" is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. The band took some very weighty topics like homelessness, child trauma, abortion, and gun violence and turned them into songs that were very sincere in their introspection. My question pertains to the song "Jeremy". Which of these themes best describes the content of the song? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. "Animals" is the 1977 Pink Floyd vehicle for Roger Waters to express his contempt for the dehuminization side of commercialism and capitalism. The album is loosely inspired by George Orwell's "Animal Farm" and has the human race divided into three animal groups. What are these three classes of animals? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Kill 'em All" was the debut effort by the groundbreaking heavy metal band Metallica. Most fans know that Dave Mustaine, of Megadeth fame, was an original member but was replaced by Kirk Hammett. Which of the following songs on "Kill 'em All" is Dave Mustaine given songwriting credit for?

Answer: Metal Militia

"Am I Evil?" was originally recorded by Diamondhead in 1980 and "Blitzkrieg" was originally recorded by the band Blitzkrieg in 1981. "Seek and Destroy" was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. It is interesting that Dave Mustaine has songwriting credits on four songs while his replacement has none.

Answer: A painting of a naked lady.

The painting in question was a tasteful collage that happened to expose the pubic region of a woman. The reason that Perry Farrell re-released the CD with a solid white cover was to send a message to those who he felt violated his first amendment rights by censoring him. On the back cover of the CD is a passage which reads "Hitler's syphillis-ridden dreams almost came true. How could it happen? By taking control of the media. An entire country was led by a lunatic... We must protect our First Amendment, before sick dreams become law. Nobody made fun of Hitler." There is also a short essay in the CD book that bears repeating, but I refrain from doing so here. If you are unable to get this CD and read it for yourself, e-mail me and I will gladly type it out for you.
3. Who can forget the video by Faith No More with the dying fish at the end? The song was "Epic" and the CD was "The Real Thing" released in 1989. There was one cover song (a song originally recorded by another band) on this album. Name it.

Answer: War Pigs

I sincerely recommend this album to everyone. Mike Patton is a very talented vocalist who is now in a band called Tomahawk (as of October 2002). I saw Tomahawk on tour with Tool and they were very intense. Mike Patton was also featured in Mr. Bungle, another band worth checking out.

Answer: A limp body sitting in a throne.

The obvious symbolic interpretation would be based on the "decline of western civilization" premise. There is also a factory setting in the background with a smokestack spewing waste into the air, which attributes to this symbolism. As a song writer, Neil Peart respected the work of the great novelist Ayn Rand, and some of her ideologies are reflected in his lyrics. Check out this album and "2112" for several literary references to Ayn Rand's books.
Who is it?

Answer: Smashing Pumpkins

The clue about the band Chicago should have clued you into the fact that Smashing Pumpkins are not from Seattle, they are of course from The Windy City.

Answer: A doctor and a patient encumbered with leg braces

I mentioned earlier that Rush had highly suggestive visual CD covers that really brought out the lyrical content contained within the album. Tool is another band that has made the most of visual representations to enhance their music. If you ever get the chance to see them in concert, make sure to check out all the visual metaphors you will encounter, many centering around medical techniques.

Answer: 6 for Diamond Dave, 5 for Sammy

Although David Lee Roth was the lead singer for only 6 years, he was the lead singer on the following albums: "Van Halen I", "Van Halen II", "Women and Children First", "Fair Warning", "Diver Down" and "1984". Sammy Hagar provided vocals for only five albums over nearly eleven years with the band.

The albums are: "5150", "OU812", "For Unlawful Carnage Knowledge", Van Halen Live: Right Here, Right Now" and "Balance". Gary Cherone provided the vocals for "Van Halen III" and there was an album entitled "Best of Van Halen Vol. 1".

This data was acquired from the official Van Halen website.

Answer: A KFC chicken bucket

The new Guns N' Roses ensemble includes Dizzy Reed (keyboards), Chris Pitman (keyboards), Brain (drums), Buckethead N' Robin (guitar), Tommy Stinson (bass), Richard Fortus (guitar), and of course Axl Rose (vocals).

Answer: Classroom violence

Most people who have seen the video for this song probably has the image of a young boy standing in front of the classroom, shirtless, splattered with blood. The video was eventually banned from most television programs in its original form due to the graphic qualities.

The song is about a teenager from Richardson, TX named Jeremy Wade Delle who shoots himself in front of his classmates. The whole story can be read by going to http://members.tripod.com/~tincture/articles/jeremy.html.

Answer: Dogs, pigs, and sheep

The attempt here is to break people down into three classes of opportunists. The dogs are merciless and will get their will at any price. The pigs are the self-righteous tyrants who always seem to succeed; and the sheep are the mindless followers who eventually get beaten down by the dogs and pigs.

The sheep are supposedly being sent to slaughter by the pigs and dogs until they stage a revolution and overthrow the dogs. This highly symbolic album is deserving of each individual interpretation that has been given over the years. Have a listen for yourself and see what you derive from it.
