Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the lead singer & guitarist and only remaining member of the original band?

Answer: Justin Sullivan

Justin Sullivan has fronted NMA for over 28 years and is widely recognized as a very talented singer/songwriter. He appears on every New Model Army record.
2. What heavy metal band recorded a cover version of a New Model Army song in the early 90's?

Answer: Sepultura

Igor Cavalera is a big fan of New Model Army and requested that the band cover "The Hunt" from NMA's "The Ghost Of Cain" on their record "Chaos A.D." He joked that the royalties from the song would go to help Justin Sullivan get some dentures. Sullivan is well known for his missing front tooth which he has never had corrected through cosmetic surgery.
3. Who was the original bass player for New Model Army?

Answer: Stuart Morrow

Stuart Morrow appeared on the early albums "Vengeance" and "No Rest For The Wicked" before leaving the band. His replacement Jason "Moose" Harris lasted for two records "The Ghost Of Cain" and "Thunder & Consolation" before he quit as well. Peter "Nelson" Nice has been a constant member of NMA since replacing Harris.
4. New Model Army's first official live recording was entitled "Raw Melody Men". How did the band come by this album name?

Answer: It is an anagram of their name.

It was actually Justin Sullivan's wife/partner Joolz Denby who came up with the anagram for the title. Incidently, she has been a creative force behind the band from almost the beginning. She has been responsible for the art on many of the bands albums, lyrics, and inspiration among other things. She is also a very talented poet in her own right.
5. Original member Robert Heaton quit the band due to a brain tumor in 1998. He tragically died in 2004. How did he die?

Answer: Pancreatic Cancer

Drummer Robert Heaton was a driving force behind the band. He recorded with the band on every album up to "Eight" where he was replaced by his drum tech Michael Dean. Heaton was also a very talented guitarist and bass player. He also wrote a vast amount of songs for NMA's catalog. The band, in my opinion, has never been the same without him. RIP.
6. New Model Army is not a band known for having many hits or videos made for their songs. 1993's "The Love Of Hopeless Causes" featured a song called "Living In The Rose". This video was directed by a famous director's daughter. Who is her father?

Answer: David Lynch

The director for "Living In The Rose" was Jennifer Lynch who is probably best known for her film "Boxing Helena" which starred Julian Sands & Sherilyn Fenn.
7. As mentioned above, New Model Army is not a band that has had many hits or videos during its 28 year tenure. They did, however, score a sizable one (by NMA standards) with the song "51st State". What is unique about this song?

Answer: It was not written by New Model Army

"51st State" is widely known to not be a true New Model Army song. While it is credited to "Ashley Cartwight, New Model Army" the song is really written by Cartwright who was a member of the obscure band The Shakes.
8. In 2003 Justin Sullivan released an album called "Navigating By The Stars". The central theme of this album is water. It is primarily an acoustic record that features minimal drums, some keyboards, and on some songs some very prominent bass playing. Who is this renowned bass player?

Answer: Danny Thompson

Danny Thompson is a great upright bass player who has played with many different artists and bands over his career. His credits include working with Richard Thompson, Talk Talk, Tim Buckley, and Nick Drake among others. His sound is almost a trademark. You know it when you hear it. If you guessed John Entwistle, sorry but he died in 2002.

Herbie Flowers played with many artists as well but is probably best known for his work with David Bowie & Lou Reed while Sebastian Steinberg plays with Soul Coughing and is a great upright bass player in his own right.
9. In early days of the band Justin Sullivan went by a different moniker. What was it?

Answer: Slade The Leveller

For real NMA fans this is an easy one. The incorrect ones are just stupid names I came up. Sullivan to my knowledge has never revealed what "Slade The Leveller" means.
10. Finally, Justin Sullivan & Robert Heaton provided the music for Joolz Denby's poetry on an album recorded in 1987. What was the name of this album?

Answer: Hex

Joolz is a member of Red Sky Coven with Justin Sullivan, Rev Hammer, & Brett Selby. I have never heard anything they've done.
