Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is not a real type of trumpet mute?

Answer: Elf

All mutes change a trumpet's tone, as well as making its sound softer.
2. Who is the founder of the trumpet group "Tijuana Brass?"

Answer: Herb Alpert

3. What is the main difference between the trumpet and the cornet?

Answer: Their bores are different

Trumpets and cornets can play the same music, and can be used almost interchangeably. The difference is that the cornet has a conical bore which increases in diameter throughout the length of the cornet. The trumpet has a cylindrical bore which stays the same diameter until flaring out for the bell.
4. Whose trumpet is slanted at the top?

Answer: Dizzy Gillespie

One story of how Dizzy's trumpet got its shape is that one time at a party, Dizzy's trumpet was stepped on. He did not have enough money to replace it, so it stayed. Gillespie's trumpet is now an icon...just like his cheeks.
5. Here's one for an expert: How do you bend the trumpet into its shape without crumpling the tubing?

Answer: fill the tubing with lead or another material

Once the tubes have been made the correct diameter and thickness, they are filled with lead or another material, then bent to shape. After the bending, the filling is melted out, leaving a hollow tube.
6. The trumpet is an ancient instrument. In which famous king's tomb were two early trumpets found?

Answer: King Tut

Trumpets have been found on every inhabited continent. The two from King Tut's tomb date from about 1500 BC!
7. What does a trumpet usually play in a school band or marching band?

Answer: Keeps the melody

The trumpet makes the melody of most marches, fight songs, and most other band songs.
8. What makes the trumpet's sound?

Answer: Your lips

Like all brass instruments, the trumpet's sound starts with the player's lips buzzing together into a mouthpiece.
9. What is the lowest note in a trumpet' written range?

Answer: F# below middle C

Although you can play lower, its written range goes down to F#.
10. Which of these can not play around the trumpet's range?

Answer: Sousaphone

The Sousaphone, created by John Phillip Sousa, is a marching version of the tuba, and plays much lower than a trumpet does.
