Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song, noted for its effective use of the banjo, was voted number one?

Answer: Mumford & Sons - "Little Lion Man"

Mumford & Sons became the first artist in five years to make number one on their debut year to the countdown. Their victory was by the biggest margin in the countdown's history. The result was known beforehand, as the result was accidentally leaked four days early.
2. Which veteran band whose entries date back to 1995 made number 100 in countdown?

Answer: Foo Fighters - "Wheels"

Foo Fighters first made the countdown in 1995 with "This is a Call" and "I'll Stick Around" which made numbers 37 and 70 respectively. The only other artists in the 2009 countdown to have debuted earlier were The Prodigy and Weezer, who both made the 1994 countdown.
3. What was the highest entry for a former number one band?

Answer: Muse - "Uprising"

Muse made number one in 2007 with "Knights of Cydonia" by only 13 votes. "Uprising" made number nine which is the same number they reached in 2006 with "Starlight".
"All of the Dreamers" made number 49, "No You Girls" made number 55 and "She's a Genius" made number 77.
4. Which French band managed two top 20 entries?

Answer: Phoenix

Phoenix had not previously featured in any countdown. They made numbers four and 13 with "Lisztomania" and "1901". Miike Snow, The Bloody Beetroots and Flight of the Conchords are from Sweden, Italy, and New Zealand respectively.
5. Which band scored four entries from their album "The Resistance"?

Answer: Muse

In addition to making the top ten with "Uprising", they made numbers 19, 35, and 84 with "Undisclosed Desires", "Resistance", and "United States of Eurasia". Muse are one of the most successful bands in the countdown from 2000-2009, with 15 entries.
6. Which British band scored back to back songs in the countdown from their album "Lungs"?

Answer: Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine made numbers 44 and 45 with "Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)" and "Drumming Song". Like Muse, they managed four entries, with "Kiss With a Fist" and "Dog Days are Over" also making the list.
7. No Australian number one singles made the Hottest 100.

Answer: True

The highest charting song in the countdown was "Not Fair" by Lily Allen, which made number three in Australia in June. There were four UK number one singles which were "I'm Not Alone" by Calvin Harris, "Bonkers" and "Holiday" by Dizzee Rascal, and "Bulletproof" by La Roux.
8. How many entries in the top 10 were by American artists?

Answer: None

This marked the first time in the countdown's history that no American artists featured in the top ten. The highest American entry was "Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which made number 11.
9. Approximately how many votes were cast?

Answer: 1,100,000

2009's poll saw a record number of votes, up from 800,000 in 2008. The votes were cast by a record 130,000 voters, who could choose up to ten songs to vote for.
10. Dave Grohl made the countdown as part of two bands.

Answer: True

Dave Grohl barely made the countdown at all. As part of the Foo Fighters he made number 100 with Wheels, and as part of Them Crooked Vultures he made number 98 with "New Fang". Dave Grohl has also made the countdown with Nirvana and as a guest drummer for Queens of the Stone Age.
