Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which artist claimed the number one spot for 1993?

Answer: Denis Leary

After three years of the countdown being unrestricted, 1993 saw a change in voting. It was the first time that it was restricted to music released in the previous year.
2. Which song finished in 100th place?

Answer: Van Morrison & John Lee Hooker - "Gloria"

"Gloria" was one of three duets in the countdown, the highest being "Trout" by Neneh Cherry & Michael Stipe.
Inner Circle - "Sweat (A La La La La Long)" made number 94.
The Lemonheads - "Mrs. Robinson" made number 79.
Rage Against the Machine - "Bullet in the Head" made number 84.
3. Which artist achieved the most entries in the countdown?

Answer: The Cruel Sea

The Cruel Sea achieved this honour with just three entries. These entries were "The Honeymoon Is Over" at number nine, "Black Stick" at number 21, and "Delivery Man" at number 95.
4. True or false, no artist had more than one top 20 entry?

Answer: True

1993 was the first year to feature this. It was close to not happening though, as The Cruel Sea made numbers nine and 21. This is a rare occurance, as the next time this happened was 14 years later in 2007.
5. Which top ten artist was the only one to have had an entry in a previous year?

Answer: U2

As the voting changed, many new bands saw dominance in 1993, with U2 being the only artist in the top ten with a previous entry. It was only a close entry though, with "Bad" just scraping in at number 98 in 1991.
6. How many entries were by Australian artists?

Answer: 24

The number of Australian entries gradually increased over the decade. Although there were more entries in 1993 than there were in 1990 and 1991, Australia was greatly underrepresented at the top, with only one entry in the top 20.
7. Did any artist receive consecutive entries in the countdown? (Example: 56 and 57)

Answer: No

This is a rare occurrence, as consecutive entries are common. The closest artist to having consecutive entries were The Badloves, who had entries at numbers 77 and 82.
8. What was the highest entry by a British artist?

Answer: Radiohead - "Creep"

Radiohead just missed out on topping the list, making number two with "Creep". Five years later, they made the top five in the 1998 Hottest 100 of all time.
The Cure - "Friday I'm in Love" made number 39.
New Order - "Regret" made number 65.
Blur - "For Tomorrow" made number 90.
9. Which Swedish artist made the top ten?

Answer: Atomic Swing

Atomic Swing only just edged in, making number ten with "Stone Me into the Groove". It was the only top ten in the countdown from a Swedish artist over the entire decade.
10. Which artist in the top ten also made the top ten in the next year?

Answer: The Cranberries

The Cranberries did very well in the 1993 countdown, making number three with "Linger". One year later, they managed to improve on this by finishing at number one with "Zombie".
