Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who recorded 'Stairway To Heaven'?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

'Stairway To Heaven' is probably the best song ever written. It appeared on 'Led Zeppelin 4' (or 'Zoso' as you might have heard it called). Led Zeppelin got their name courtesy of another rock legend, Keith Moon of The Who. On hearing an audition (or possibly a tape, I'm not quite sure) by the band, Moon said "This band will sink like a lead balloon. Faster even- like a lead zeppelin!" (A zeppelin is an airship.) For all his drumming talent, Moon clearly lacked taste.
2. Who first recorded the youth anthem 'Teenage Kicks'?

Answer: The Undertones

'Teenage Kicks' was famously championed by the late great John Peel when he was a young DJ on a pirate radio station. It remained his favourite song until his death. We miss you, John.
3. 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' was a hit for which British punk band?

Answer: The Clash

This song has become famous as the favoured song of Levi's. The Clash are probably better known for their seminal 1979 album 'London Calling', which was re-released in 2004 as a commemorative 25th anniversary double album (at least, it was a double album in the UK).
4. British indie band The Futureheads had recent success with their cover of 'Hounds of Love'. But who recorded this song originally?

Answer: Kate Bush

That's right, Kate Bush of 'Wuthering Heights' fame. In November 2005, she released her eighth studio album 'Aerial' in the UK, her first album in nearly a decade.
5. Who originally recorded the stadium anthem 'We Will Rock You'?

Answer: Queen

Now, admittedly, defunct boyband Five's 1999 album 'Invincible' included a cover version of 'We Will Rock You'. Despite being recorded in conjunction with the surviving members of Queen, it was truly terrible.
6. Which American indie band recorded the song 'Last Nite'?

Answer: The Strokes

'Last Nite' was first released as a stand-alone single, but due to huge popularity was included on the full length album titled 'Is This It?'.
7. 'Yesterday' is the most covered song in rock history. But who recorded it originally?

Answer: The Beatles

There are over 3,000 cover versions of 'Yesterday', by artists ranging from Elvis to Placido Domingo to, bizarrely, Daffy Duck.
8. 'Welcome To The Jungle' was an early success for which US metal band?

Answer: Guns N' Roses

'Welcome To The Jungle' is from their debut album 'Appetite For Destruction'. It also features on their 'Greatest Hits' album.
9. 'Stumble And Fall' is by which indie band?

Answer: Razorlight

In 2005 Johnny Borell, the lead singer of Razorlight, had a fight with Carl Barat of The Libertines, and lost. Borell had the last laugh though, a few months later, The Libertines emploded amid the media furore surrounding the arrest of frontman and renowned waster Pete Doherty. Feeder recorded a song with a very similar name, 'Tumble and Fall', which appeared on their most recent album 'Pushing The Senses'.
10. Elvis, the King of Rock n' Roll, had an incredible 30 number one singles. Did he write any of those songs?

Answer: no

Elvis was typical of many performers of that time in that he had little or no input into the writing of his songs. Many of his most famous songs were written by Tin Pan Alley duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, including 'Hound Dog'.
