Sadly, the gamin-faced beauty Audrey Hepburn had died a few weeks before the Oscar event. Each year the Academy selects one of its members to receive the Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Award. Audrey was to be that 1993 recipient for her work with children around the world. Acclaimed for her beauty and charm and a somewhat privileged upbringing, Ms.Hepburn during a part of her childhood, lived in Holland during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. From this experience, it would seem understanding of the hardship of children was learned.

Born in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa, Charlize Theron, won the Best Actress Motion Picture Academy Award in 2004 for her role in the movie, "Monster".
Theron, whose native tongue is Afrikaans, has dual citizenship, South African and American. Charlize has maintained involvement with her country of origin in her philanthropic work. In 2007, Charlize Theron established "The African Outreach Project" which has as one of its primary goals to keep African youth safe from HIV/AIDS. Ms. Theron is also a partner with Tom's Shoes, a charity organization, where she has added her African Outreach Project logo and the colors of that organization to slipper-like shoes of her original design which
are made for impoverished children. As many as fifty thousand or more shoes have been distributed to needy children in South Africa.
