Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What prince was killed by his pursuers after his long hair got caught in the branches of a tree?

Answer: Absalom

Absalom was the son of King David and his wife Maacah (2 Samuel 3:3). The prince and his supporters tried to overthrow his father's kingdom, but David's army proved too strong. Absalom fled on a mule but got his long hair caught in the branches of an oak tree.

While he was dangling in the air, Joab, one of David's generals, stabbed him with three javelins, killing the rebellious prince. (2 Samuel 18:1-18)
2. What Hebrew word meaning "let it be" is traditionally used today to end Christian prayers?

Answer: Amen

"Amen" was used in the Bible to show agreement to a statement previously made. Although a Hebrew word, the word was used often in later New Testament Greek writings and may be one of the most recognizable words in the world today.
3. This word, which refers to God in the Bible, is also the name of a famous Swedish musical group.

Answer: Abba

"Abba" is the Aramaic word for "father". It is applied to God in Mark 14:36, Romans 8:15, and Galatians 4:6. "Alpha and Omega" would be similar to the phrase "A and Z" in English. It refers to God in Revelation 1:8 and Revelation 21:6. The phrase was used by John the Revelator to stress the faithful sovereignty of God.

It is also used to describe Jesus (Revelation 22:13). "Almighty God" is used to describe the omnipotence of God. It is found in at least eleven biblical books, appearing the most times in the Job and Revelation.

However, Abba is the correct answer because it is also the name of the Swedish group which had the most success from 1972 to the early 1980's. Some of their hits included "Dancing Queen", "I Have a Dream" and "Take a Chance on Me".

The group name is an acronym formed from the first letters of each band member's first name: Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid.
4. Which of these duos were NOT a father and son?

Answer: Aenon and Ahithopel

Adam was the first man according to Genesis and Abel was his second son. He was murdered by his older brother Cain (Genesis 4). Ahab was the eight king of the northern kingdom of Israel (874-853 BC). His son Ahaziah followed his father as Israel's ninth king (853-852 BC).

They both practiced idolatry and are considered by the Bible to be wicked kings. Aaron was Moses' brother and the first high priest of Israel. Abihu was one of Aaron's four sons. He became a priest but was killed along with his brother Nadab, when they offered "unholy fire" before the Lord (Leviticus 10:1-3). Aenon is a small town located by the Jordan River. John the Baptizer baptized near there (John 3:23). Ahithopel was one of King David's trusted advisors who turned traitor.
5. Where did the Apostle Paul preach his famous sermon revealing to his listeners the identity of the "unknown god"?

Answer: Athens

Luke records this message in Acts 17:16-34. This happened during Paul's second missionary journey. He preached this message at a place called Mars Hill or the Areopagus near Athens' Acropolis. Referring to an idol dedicated to an "unknown god" Paul declares he was making known to them the God who was not known - Yahweh.
6. What sacred object served as the container for the two tablets of the Law?

Answer: Ark of the Covenant

God instructed Moses to build the Ark of the Covenant. Besides the two tablets of the Law, it contained a bowl of manna and Aaron's rod. See Exodus 25:10-22, 31:1-5 and 37:1-9 for details. The Ark was to be a constant reminder of the holy presence and faithfulness of the children of Israel's God.
7. The biblical books of Daniel and Revelation are an example of what type of literature?

Answer: Apocalyptic Literature

"Apocalyptic" is derived from a Greek word meaning "revelation". This type of literature was usually characterized by the author receiving detailed visions consisting of extensive symbolism. The subject matter of this genre was often a prophetic message that dealt with Divine judgments being placed upon the readers and/or eschatological subject matter. Apocryphal literature usually refers to the fourteen books of the Septuagint regarded as not canonical by Protestants. Eleven of those writings, however, are accepted in the Roman Catholic Canon. Apostolic literature, of course, refers to the writings of the apostles and Alexandrian literature would be writings that originated from or concerned itself with Alexandria or possibly Alexander the Great.
8. According to the epistles of John, which of these is NOT a true statement regarding what John refers to as "antichrists"?

Answer: Antichrists had never appeared at the time of John's writings

The word "Antichrist" appears only four times in the Bible, all in John's letters (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3 and 2 John 7). The presence of many antichrists is mentioned at the time of these writings.
9. There are three different people with the name "Ananias" mentioned in the New Testament. Which of these events did not involve one of our men named Ananias?

Answer: A man named Ananias brought a boy's lunch to Jesus that he used to miraculously feed over 5,000 people

There was a man named Ananias who, along with his wife Sapphira, attempted to deceive others concerning the gift they gave to the church. They were struck dead (Acts 5:1-5). Another fellow named Ananias was sent by God to help in the conversion of Paul (aka Saul of Tarsus)(Acts 9:13-18; 22:12-16). Still another man called Ananias was a high priest who presided over the Sanhedrin Court when Paul was arrested at the end of his third missionary journey.

This Ananias did testify against Paul. The man who brought the boy's lunch to Jesus was the Apostle Andrew (John 6).
10. What did Moses use to inflict the plague of boils upon the Egyptians?

Answer: Ashes

Exodus 9:8-10 says that Moses tossed ashes into the air and that they became like "fine dust over all the land" and caused a plague of boils to break out among both people and animals. Ashes were also used in Bible times to signify grief, humiliation, or penitence.
