Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Genesis 35:16-17 tells of a woman being in hard labor before she died giving birth to her son Benjamin. What was the name of the woman?

Answer: Rachel

Both Genesis 35:16 and 17 in the NKJV make reference to Rachel being in "hard labor" giving birth to her son Benjamin. According to Scripture, just after Benjamin was born, Rachel died. She was the wife of Jacob and mother of an older son, Joseph.
2. Genesis 18:14 in the NKJV provides a quote from God in which He asks Abraham, "Is anything too hard for the LORD?" The verse goes on to state, "At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son." What was the name of Abraham and Sarah's son?

Answer: Isaac

Isaac is the correct answer. According to Genesis 17:17, Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety when Isaac was born. On top of this, Sarah had been unable to conceive all her life. Genesis 17:19 states Abraham received divine instructions to call the baby Isaac.
3. Who, according to Scripture, had a "hard heart" and refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt and go to Canaan, known as the Promised Land?

Answer: The Pharaoh

Scripture repeatedly tells of the Pharaoh having a hard heart and refusing to give permission to Moses and Aaron to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. It was only after ten plagues were unleashed on Egypt that the Pharaoh finally capitulated and allowed the Israelites to leave.

Details about the Pharaoh and his hard heart can be found in Chapters 7 through 14 of Exodus.
4. 1 Kings 10:1 tells of a monarch travelling to Jerusalem and presenting Solomon with a vast array of gifts and testing him "with hard questions". Who was the monarch?

Answer: The Queen of Sheba

In addition to presenting Solomon with a vast array of gifts, 1 Kings 10:1 in the NKJV states the Queen of Sheba also tested him "with hard questions." Scripture doesn't go into details, but Solomon had all the answers for the queen. 1 Kings 10:3 in the NKJV states, "So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her."

Scripture goes on to state the queen of Sheba gave Solomon "one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great quantity, and precious stones."
5. The following verse, containing the word 'hardens', is from the NKJV: "Happy is the man who is always reverent, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity." In what Old Testament book do you find such a verse?

Answer: Proverbs

The verse with the word 'hardens' in it is from Proverbs 28:14 in the NKJV. Chapter 28 of Proverbs, similar to the rest of the book, is a collection of sage advice and to witty sayings. The subhead for the chapter in the NKJV Study Bible is 'The Righteous Are Bold as a Lion'.

Much of the book was written by Solomon, the son of David. However, Agur wrote Chapter 30 and Lemuel wrote Chapter 31.
6. Paul encouraged a young and timid worker in the early church to "endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." Who was the young and timid worker?

Answer: Timothy

The correct answer is Timothy. Paul, in 2 Timothy 2:3 in the NKJV, tells Timothy he "must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ". Timothy was the son of Eunice and the grandson of Lois. However, the name of his father is not given in Scripture.

Timothy was a worker in the early church who was known for being young and timid. Timothy had a close relationship with Paul, who refers to him as his son in Scripture.
7. Before Jesus cured a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath in a synagogue, He admonished a group of people for their hardness of heart. Who did Jesus admonish, as per Mark 3:1-5?

Answer: The Pharisees

Mark 3:1-6 in the NKJV tells of Jesus admonishing the Pharisees for their "hardness of heart". The passages tells of Jesus miraculously healing a man with a withered hand in a synagogue, but the Pharisees were upset because the healing took place on the Sabbath.

After the miraculous healing, the passage states the Pharisees went out "and immediately plotted with the Herodians... how they might destroy Him."
8. The following verse containing the word 'hardens' is from the NKJV: "Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens." In what New Testament book do you find such a verse?

Answer: Romans

The verse in question is from Romans 9:18 in the NKJV. The book was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and addressed to believers of the early church at Rome.

The question should have been relatively easy for most quiz players to answer as out of the four different options, Romans is the only book from the New Testament. Esther, Amos and Obadiah are all found in the Old Testament.
9. What man encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus and was told by Christ, "It is hard for you to kick against the goads," as per Acts 9:5 in the NKJV?

Answer: Paul

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, encountered Jesus while he was travelling on the road to Damascus. Paul, who was known as Saul at the time, was a vehement opponent of followers of Christ and was travelling to Damascus to persecute believers. Things changed dramatically, however, when Jesus appeared in a blinding light and proclaimed in the NKJV to him "It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

(In the KJV, it states "it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks" while the NIV does not make any reference to kicking by Paul.)

Wickionary.org offers this explanation about kicking against the pricks, or goads: "To kick back (of an animal etc.) against being goaded. (idiomatic, figuratively) To struggle against one's fate."
10. Who made the statement that it is hard for a rich man to enter heaven, adding "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God"?

Answer: Jesus

The statement it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven was made by Jesus to His disciples and other people who were with Him at the time. Christ made the statement after He counselled a man known as the rich young ruler.

Luke 16:24-25 in the NKJV quotes Jesus as saying: "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
