All in the Family -- One Mother of a Quiz?

I recently compiled a quiz on Biblical fathers and I thought it would be appropriate to do a follow-up quiz on the theme of mothers in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Hope you enjoy it. (The NIV was used for this quiz.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first mother in the Old Testament?

Answer: Eve

Eve, of course, is the correct answer. In addition to being the first mother mentioned in the Old Testament, Genesis 3:20 states Adam named her Eve because she would become "the mother of all the living." She was the mother of Cain, Abel and Seth and other unnamed sons and daughters. It is not known, however, how many children she had.
2. According to Scripture, which woman in the Old Testament and the New Testament was the mother of the most named children?

Answer: Milcah

I'm grateful to FunTrivia member Arpeggionist for providing valuable research on this question. Going by the names of woman and their children listed in Scripture, Milcah takes the crown. Her eight children are named in Genesis 22:20-22. Their names are Utz, Buz, K'mu'el, Kesed, Chazo, Pildash, Yidlaf, B'tu'el. Milcah was the wife of Nachor, brother of Abraham.

In second place is Jacob's wife Leah who was the mother of six sons and one daughter. And as Arpeggionist points out, while David was said to be the youngest son among the ten children of Jesse (eight sons and two daughters according to 1 Chronicles), there is no account of who their mothers were.

It is highly likely a number of women had more than eight children in the Bible, but no details are provided. It's also worthy of noting Eve is referred to as "the mother of all living" but this does not qualify her to take the title of giving birth to most children.
3. According to Scripture which woman was the first to become the mother of twins?

Answer: Rebekah

Rebekah gave birth to the first set of twins -- Esau and Jacob. Their births are recorded in the 25th chapter of Genesis. Esau was born minutes before his brother. And although they were twins, the two would grow up to become bitter adversaries, sharing little in common. Scripture states Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. Isaac, the father of the boys, favored Esau while Rebekah loved Jacob. Later in life, Jacob would cheat Esau of their father's blessing with the end result being Jacob fleeing for his life with Esau plotting to kill him.
4. Obed was the grandfather of David. Who was Obed's mother?

Answer: Ruth

The birth of Obed is recorded in Ruth 4:13-17. Her husband was Boaz and much of the book of Ruth in the Old Testament is devoted to their romance. Obed would become the father of Jesse, who would become the father of eight sons, with David being the youngest. Scripture states Ruth and Orpah, two Moabite women, were both married to sons of Naomi. All three women became widows with Orpah returning to her home country and Ruth opting to stick things out with her mother-in-law. Ruth's name is listed in Matthew 1:5 as part of the genealogy of Christ.
5. What were the names of Bathsheba's children?

Answer: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon

According to 1 Chronicles 3:5, Bathsheba was the mother of four sons -- Shammua, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon. She actually had five sons, but her firstborn died shortly after childbirth following an adulterous affair with King David. Although the names are listed in 1 Chronicles 3:5 with Solomon's name last, he was the oldest of the four, as per 2 Samuel 12:15-24.
6. Adonijah attempted to become the king, replacing his father David. He was thwarted in his plans, however, by Bathsheba, with Solomon becoming the king. Who was the mother of Adonijah?

Answer: Haggith

The correct answer is Haggith, but little is known about her as she is mentioned only in passing reference. Her name appears five times in the Old Testament, and in each case Adonijah is referred to as the son of Haggith. For Adonijah not to become king would have been a bitter disappointment for Haggith as the Queen Mother would have been the most powerful woman in the land.
7. Solomon was replaced by his son Rehoboam as king. Who was the mother of Rehoboam?

Answer: Naamah

Not much is known about Naamah with Scripture simply stating she was an Ammonite. It would have been quite an accomplishment for her to become the Queen Mother as she definitely had a lot of competition. Scripture states Solomon had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. In this era, the Queen Mother would be the most powerful woman in the land.
8. Scripture states the daughter of Zechariah gave birth to a son who would become King Hezekiah. What's her name?

Answer: Abijah

2 Chronicles 29:1 states "Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah." It is believed by many that her father was Zechariah the prophet. However, little is known about Abijah. Incidentally, Abijah is also the name of several prominent men in the Old Testament.
9. Who was the mother of John the Baptist?

Answer: Elizabeth

Elizabeth (also referred to as Elishiba) is the correct answer. Her story is told in the first chapter of Luke. Elizabeth's husband was Zechariah, who served as a priest. According to Luke 1:5, she was a descendant of Aaron. Luke 1:18, in the NIV Bible, states Elizabeth was "well along in years" when she became pregnant.

Her son would go on to prepare the way for Christ, Scripture states.
10. Which of these New Testament women is most likely to have been the mother of John and James, the sons of Zebedee?

Answer: Salome

Many theologians believe Salome was the mother of James and John, two of the original 12 Disciples. Her husband was Zebedee. According to Scripture, Salome witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus and was one of the women who discovered that the tomb was empty.
