Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First husband of Ruth

Answer: Mahlon

According to Ruth 4:10, Mahlon was the first husband of Ruth.

Mahlon was the son of Elimelech and Naomi. Details are not given, but Scripture tells of Mahlon, his brother Chilion and their father Elimelech dying. Chilion was married to Orpah.

Scripture goes on to tell of Ruth, a Gentile woman, marrying Boaz, a wealthy Jewish landowner. Their marriage would result in the birth of Obed, the grandfather of King David.

In Matthew 1:5, the names Ruth, Boaz and Obed all appear in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
2. Husband of Naomi

Answer: Elimelech

Naomi was married to Elimelech, according to Ruth 1:2.

Little is known about Elimelech, apart from details that he was from Bethlehem and he and his family moved to Moab during a time of famine in Israel.

Scripture tells of Elimelech and his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, dying. Details about their deaths are not given in Scripture.
3. David's wife who had been married to Nabal

Answer: Abigail

Abigail is the correct answer. According to 1 Samuel 25:3, she was originally married to Nabal, a man who is described as "harsh and evil in his doings".

Shortly after David met Abigail, Nabal would die in a case of divine retribution. With Nabal dead, Abigail became David's wife.

Interestingly, she is the only woman in the Bible who is described as being both beautiful and intelligent.
4. Evil Persian official who was married to Zeresh

Answer: Haman

Zeresh was the wife of Haman, an evil Persian official who had a diabolical plan to exterminate all the Jews in the vast area stretching from India in the east to Ethiopia in the west.

However, he was thwarted in his plan by Mordecai and Queen Esther. The Book of Esther tells of Haman being hanged on the very gallows he had planned to use for Mordecai's death.
5. Prophet who had a wife who died suddenly

Answer: Ezekiel

Ezekiel is the correct answer. Ezekiel 24:15-27 tell of Ezekiel's wife being the "desire" of his eyes and taken away with "one stroke". No name is given for the woman.

According to an AI overview, the death of Ezekiel's wife was more than a personal tragedy. In fact it was a "sign" to the people of Israel about the upcoming loss of their own precious things due to their disobedience to God.
6. Husband of Rahab the prostitute (Matthew 1:5)

Answer: Salmon

According to Matthew 1:5, Rahab the prostitute ended up marrying Salmon, an Israelite. They were the parents of Boaz who was the husband of Ruth.

The names Rahab, Salmon, Boaz and Ruth can be all found in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
7. Believed to be the wife of Philemon

Answer: Apphia

There is no smoking gun, but many theologians believe Apphia was the wife of Philemon.

The belief is based on what Paul writes in Philemon 1:1-2. In the NKJV, Paul says his letter is dedicated to "Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house."

Archippus is believed to be the son of Philemon and Apphia.

Church tradition also holds Apphia was Philemon's wife.

Philemon was the owner of the run-away slave Onesimus who was converted to Christianity by Paul.

Paul's letter to Philemon is a passionate plea to accept Onesimus back into the fold as an equal in Christ.
8. Husband of Sapphira who lied to Peter about details regarding sale of property

Answer: Ananias

The husband of Sapphira was Ananias.

They husband and wife were struck dead after selling some property and claiming they were donating all the proceeds to the early church, as per Acts 54:1-11. This even though they had kept a certain portion of the proceeds for themselves.

Scripture tells of Ananias being struck dead after he lied to Peter about the matter. About three hours later, Sapphira was questioned about Peter about the sale of the property not knowing her husband had been struck dead.

When Sapphira told the same lie as her husband, she was struck dead too.
9. Evil leader who married the wife of his brother

Answer: Herod

According to Matthew 14:3-4, Herod married Herodias who was originally married to his brother Philip.

The union was strongly denounced by John the Baptist and Herod had him imprisoned. While in prison, Herodias pulled strings behind the scenes to have John executed.

Herod is also known for his role in the trial of Jesus, as per Luke 23:7-12.
10. Gospel that contains a parable regarding a wedding feast for the son of a king

Answer: Matthew

The Parable of the Wedding Feast is a parable told by Jesus that is found in only Matthew 22:1-14.

The parable tells of a king organizing a lavish wedding feast for his son and the people who are invited refuse to attend the gala affair. As a result, the king sent out his servants to invite other people to attend but they seized his servants and killed them.

The king responded by sending his army to kill the murderers and set their city on fire.

Vers 8 to 10 tell what happened next: "Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.' So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests."

The parable goes on to tell of the king seeing a man at the wedding feast not dressed in wedding attire. When the king asked the man why he was not dressed in wedding attire, the man was speechless.

Verses 13 and 14 conclude the parable by stating: "Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.'"
