Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number of wives and concubines of King Solomon

Answer: 1,000

Incredibly, King Solomon had 700 wives who were princesses as well as 300 concubines, according to 1 Kings 11:3. In other words he had a harem consisting of 1,000 women.

Many of the women were foreign, including the daughter of the Pharaoh. A number of marriages were entered into to establish political alliances. However, Scripture tells of the foreign women influencing Solomon later in life to worship false gods.
2. Number of wives and concubines of Rehoboam

Answer: 78

According to 2 Chronicles 11:21, King Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines for a total of 78 female partners.

However, the verse in question also states Macah, the daughter of Absalom, was his favourite wife. Rehoboam was the father of 28 sons and 60 daughters.

He was the son of Solomon and the grandson of David, two noted kings of Israel.
3. Going strictly by Scripture, the number of named wives of David

Answer: 8

Going strictly by Scripture, King David had eight named wives.

The named wives were:
Michal (1 Samuel 18:20-27)
Ahinoam (1 Samuel 25:43)
Abigail (1 Samuel 25:39-42)
Maacah (2 Samuel 3:3)
Haggith (2 Samuel 3:4)
Abital (2 Samuel 3:4)
Eglah (2 Samuel 3:5)
Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:3, 1 Chronicles 3:5)

However, it must be pointed out Scripture states David took other wives and concubines and as a result the exact number of women is not known. (See 2 Samuel 5:13.)
4. Wife of Elkanah and a 'rival' of Hannah

Answer: Peninnah

Elkanah was married to two women, Peninnah and Hannah.

Although they were both married to the same man, the two women did not get along at all.

According to 1 Samuel 1:2-6, Peninnah had a number of children while Hannah was unable to conceive. Scripture tells of Peninnah taunting and provoking Hannah about the fact she was childless.

In fact, Verse 6 describes Peninnah as a "rival" who provoked Hannah "severely, to make her miserable." Hannah was so distressed she would weep and find it difficult to eat.

Scripture goes on to tell of Hannah fervently praying to God and miraculously giving birth to Samuel. After Samuel's birth, Peninnah is no longer mentioned in Scripture.
5. Going strictly by Scripture, was Mary Magdalene married?

Answer: No

Going strictly by Scripture, Mary Magdalene was not married. It is quite possible she was married after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.

However, the answer to this question has to be 'no' she was not recorded in the Bible as being married.

According to Mark 16:9, Jesus had cast seven demons out of Mary.
6. Going by Scripture, was Deborah, a prophetess and judge of Israel, married?

Answer: Yes

Yes, Deborah, a prophetess and a dynamic female judge of Israel was married. According to Judges 4:4, her husband's name was Lapidoth. (In the NIV he is known as Lappidoth.)

However, there is no information in Scripture about Lapidoth as he is mentioned in passing reference.
7. Husband of a daughter of Reuel, a Midianite priest who was also known as Jethro

Answer: Moses

Moses married Zipporah, the daughter of Reuel, a Midianite priest who is sometimes referred to as Jethro.

According to Exodus 2:16-18, Reuel had seven daughters. However, Zipporah is the only one who is named in Scripture.

Moses and Zipporah were the parents of two sons. Their names were Gershom and Eliezer.
8. Husband of Salome

Answer: Zebedee

The husband of Salome was Zebedee. They were the parents of John and James, two of the original twelve disciples of Jesus Christ.

Zebedee was a successful fisherman in Bethsaida, a community on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
9. Man who married a young woman who was pregnant even though she was a virgin

Answer: Joseph

Joseph, of course, was the husband of Mary, the young woman who gave birth to Jesus while still a virgin.

According to Matthew 1:19, Joseph was "just", and after he found out Mary was pregnant, he had planned to quietly break off the engagement.

However, after an angel visited him and told him "do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit" he agreed to go ahead with the marriage.

According to Scripture, he was a carpenter.
10. In what Gospel does Jesus describe Himself as a Bridegroom?

Answer: Luke

The correct answer in this case is the Gospel of Luke. However, to be fair, Jesus also describes Himself as the Bridegroom in Matthew and Mark.

The pertinent passages are Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19-20, and Luke 5:34-35.

In the passages, Jesus explains to others why His disciples did not fast while He was still with them.

An AI overview explaines things this way: "This metaphor highlights His role as the Messianic Bridegroom who has come to inaugurate the new covenant."
