Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Husbands, _______ your wives and do not be harsh with them." -- Colossians 3:19 (NIV)

Answer: love

Paul gives husbands a pretty basic instruction here in Colossians 3. That's to love their wives and treat them kindly rather than being harsh or bitter. In the family structure described in this chapter, husbands have responsibilities that go beyond just providing for the household, making decisions, and being the head of the family.

They are also expected to show genuine love and consideration toward their wives in both their words and their actions.
2. "Wives, _______ yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior." -- Ephesians 5:22-23 (NIV)

Answer: submit

This is Paul again, describing marriage as a relationship where the husband has a leadership role and the wife is to submit to that authority. He compares the husband's role to Christ's relationship with the church. Paul says that marriage mirrors that spiritual order.

The passage also goes on to place serious responsibilities on husbands, commanding them to love their wives as Christ loved the church and subsequently gave himself up for her. The husband is to provide for, protect, instruct, and sacrifice for his family.
3. "Children, _______ your parents in the Lord, for this is right." -- Ephesians 6:1 (NIV)

Answer: obey

This is a callback to the Ten Commandments. Paul reminds kids in this verse that respecting and obeying their parents is part of God's message. Later in the passage, he also tells fathers not to provoke their kids to anger, but to bring them up with guidance.
4. "And over all these virtues _______ love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." -- Colossians 3:14 (NIV)

Answer: put on

Here Paul is instructing Christians to leave behind their old ways and adopt such qualities as kindness, patience, humility, and forgiveness. He then puts love above all the other qualities, saying that it's the glue that holds them all together. This isn't exclusive just to families, but it definitely applies. Family life inevitably leads us all to get on each other's nerves from time to time. Qualities like patience, kindness, and love can get you through all that.
5. "Fathers, do not _______ your children, or they will become discouraged." -- Colossians 3:21 (NIV)

Answer: embitter

We have Paul again giving advice for a healthy and happy family. Here he's reminding fathers that children need encouragement as well as guidance. Although we're told that parents have a responsibility to instruct and correct bad behavior, things like constant criticism, unreasonable demands, or harsh treatment really don't help things and can leave children feeling defeated.
6. "_______ children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." -- Proverbs 22:6

Answer: start

Proverbs 22:6 is all about giving children a good start in life by teaching them values, habits, and principles that they will carry with them all their lives. Parents have a big influence on how their children end up treating others, handling responsibilities, making hard decisions, and having their own families.
7. "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they _______ one flesh." -- Genesis 2:24 (NIV)

Answer: become

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." It's the first line of the Bible, and a good place to start. In Genesis 2, God creates man and recognizes that it's not so good for him to be alone, which you know if you've ever seen the things single men get up to.

The solution was the creation of woman. The chapter goes on to describe the creation of the first human relationship between husband and wife, following God's creation of Eve as a companion for Adam. These verses establish the idea of marriage as a new bond, in which children leave their family to create new families of their own.
8. "Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not _______ your mother's teaching." -- Proverbs 1:8 (NIV)

Answer: forsake

Proverbs begins by talking about the value of wisdom. This verse encourages children to pay attention to the guidance they receive from both parents. There weren't a lot of textbooks in ancient Israel, and a great deal of wisdom was passed down through families: parents teaching their children how to make good decisions and live responsibly. Thousands of years later, it's still good advice for children to follow to avoid some painful mistakes.
9. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and _______ Himself up for her" -- Ephesians 5:25 (NIV)

Answer: gave

Once again, we have Paul using the relationship between Christ and the church as an example of the kind of love husbands are to show their wives. Christ's love is described as selfless and sacrificial, putting the well-being of others ahead of His own personal comfort. Applied to marriage, this means love is more than just saying the right words or remembering anniversaries, which can be hard enough.

It requires a commitment to put your wife's well-being above your own.
10. "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. _______ them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." -- Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)

Answer: impress

In these verses, Moses is telling the Israelites the importance of keeping God's commandments and passing them on to their children. The idea here is that rather than treating faith as something reserved for special occasions, parents should keep it in mind all through the day. Sitting around the house, walking the dog, eating dinner, or starting a new day all become great times to talk about what matters to you.
