Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the first book of the Old Testament?

Answer: Genesis

The correct answer is Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible. It tells of the creation of the world and gives details about a number of events, ranging from the world's first murder to a mammoth flood that covered the world.

Some of the major characters are Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and his wives Rachel and Leah as well as Joseph.
2. Who was the seventh son of Jacob and the founder of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel?

Answer: Gad

Gad is the correct answer. In addition to being the seventh son of Jacob, Gad was the son of Zilpah, who had served as a maid to Leah. His full brother was Asher.

Leah was the first wife of Jacob and according to the 30th chapter of Genesis, after she was no longer able to give birth to children she granted permission to Jacob to sleep with Zilpah. The same chapter reports Rachel, the second wife of Jacob, granted permission to Jacob to sleep with her maid, Bilhah.
3. According to Scripture, who was the judge of Israel who led 300 soldiers to victory over a vastly larger number of Midianites?

Answer: Gideon

According to the seventh chapter of Judges, Gideon led the handful of soldiers to victory over a gigantic number of men battling for the Midianites. Judges 7:1-7 tells of Gideon having 32,000 soldiers and the number being reduced to 10,000 when 22,000 of them were excused for being fearful of fighting the Midianites. Then the LORD instructed Gideon to lead 10,000 men to water where they were apparently told to drink.

Then things got downright interesting. The men who drank by lapping the water from their cupped hands like a dog were selected for battle while those who knelt down to drink were rejected. Only 300 men lapped water like a dog, yet those were the ones the LORD told Gideon to take into battle. Sure enough, the chapter ends with an amazing victory by Gideon's 300 men over their opposition.

According to Judges 6:12 in the NIV Bible, Gideon means "Mighty Warrior."
4. According to the KJV Bible, who was the woman of "whoredom" who was married to the prophet Hosea?

Answer: Gomer

Hosea was commanded by the LORD to marry Gomer. In Hosea, 1:2-3, in the KJV Bible, God tells Hosea to marry a wife of "whoredom" as an illustration of Israel's infidelity to God. Hosea 1:2-3, in the NIV Bible, states: "When the LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, 'Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the LORD.' So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son."
5. Which one was among the 12 spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan?

Answer: Gaddiel

Gaddiel was one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore Canaan. He was the son of Sodi and represented the tribe of Zebulun, according to Numbers 13:10. He was also one of the ten spies who filed negative reports to Moses about invading Canaan. According to Numbers 14:37, the ten were "struck down and died of a plague before the LORD." Only Joshua and Caleb, who both filed favorable reports about invading Canaan, survived out of the 12 spies.
6. Who was the servant of the prophet Elisha who was struck by leprosy after he fraudulently obtained money and clothes from Naaman?

Answer: Gehazi

Yes, Gehazi is the correct answer. It's a long story, but after Naaman was cured of leprosy he offered Elisha a reward which the prophet declined. Scripture reports Gehazi caught up with Naaman after his departure and asked to receive a talent of silver and two sets of clothing. Naaman promptly responded to Gehazi's request, giving him two talents of silver and two sets of clothing. Later, Gehazi would deny his actions to Elisha and after he left the prophet's presence, Scripture reports he was leprous, as white as snow.

The account of Gehazi being afflicted with leprosy is found in 2 Kings 5:20-27.
7. According to Acts 19:23-41, a riot erupted in Ephesus with Aristarchus and another one of Paul's traveling companions being seized. What's the name of the early church worker who was seized with Aristarchus?

Answer: Gaius

The report about Gaius being seized by the mob can be found in Acts 19:23-41. Not much is known about Gaius as he is mentioned in passing reference. Scripture, however, does state he was from Macedonia. His name also appears in Acts 20:4 where it states he was from the Macedonian community of Derbe. Mention of Gaius is also made in Romans 16:23 and 1 Corinthians 1:14, two books Paul is credited with writing.
8. G is for Grace. In what book in the NIV Bible would you find this passage that contains the word 'grace'? "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast."

Answer: Ephesians

The passage is from Ephesians 2:8-9. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing the book, which was addressed to members of the early church in Ephesus. Many Christians believe this passage shows it is impossible to enter heaven through good works; the only way is then through God's grace. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible sums up the interpretation this way: "Christians have been saved by grace.

The grace of God is the source of salvation; faith is the channel, not the cause. God alone saves. Salvation never originates in the efforts of people; it always arises out of the loving kindness of God."
9. G is for Gabriel. The angel Gabriel told what man in the New Testament that he would become the father of John the Baptist?

Answer: Zechariah

Scripture states Zechariah was a priest who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah. His wife was also a descendant of Aaron, as per Luke 1:5. Luke 1:11-25 tells of the angel Gabriel appearing before Zechariah and telling him of the upcoming birth of their son, who would become John the Baptist. When Zechariah doubted Gabriel's claims, he was rendered speechless as per Luke 1:20. After the baby was born, Zechariah wrote on a tablet the infant was to be called John and according to verse 64 "immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God."

John the Baptist is regarded by many Christians as the last of the prophets in the tradition of the Old Testament.
10. G is for Galilee. According to Scripture, how many different times did Jesus calm storms on the Sea of Galilee?

Answer: 2

According to Scripture, Jesus calmed storms on the Sea of Galilee on two different occasions. The first account is found in Mark 4:35-41 where the passage tells of Jesus sleeping on a cushion at the back of a boat while crossing the Sea of Galilee with the disciples. The passage also tells of Jesus being awakened by the disciples after a "furious squall" erupted. Mark 4:39, in the NIV Bible, states: "He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm." (Similar accounts are found in Matthew 8:23-27 and Luke 8:22-25.)

The second account of Jesus calming a storm on the Sea of Galilee is found in Mark 6:42-52. In this passage, the disciples were attempting to cross the Sea of Galilee when a severe storm erupted. The passage goes on to state that in the chaos, the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water and after he boarded their boat, the storm died down and "they were completely amazed." (A similar account is found in Matthew 14:22-33.)
