Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did God tell Abraham to do to all the male members of his household in Genesis 17?

Answer: circumcise

God told Abraham to circumcise all the males of his household, including his slaves. From that point on all the males had to be circumcised at eight days old. This was done as agreement between God and Abraham's household. God's 'side' of the agreement was to give the land of Canaan to Abraham's offspring. Reference: Genesis 17:3-14
2. Which book of the Bible starts abruptly, like so: "Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech"?

Answer: 1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles begins with a genealogy that lasts for eight chapters and may well be the longest in the entire Bible. After the genealogy 1 Chronicles is mostly about the history of King David's reign, including records of his battles and him preparing to build the temple.
3. According to John 3:17, Jesus did not come in order to do this to the world.

Answer: condemn

Jesus said that he hadn't come in order to condemn the world but to save it.
4. In the Bible, which one of these was a false god that the Moabites worshipped?

Answer: Chemosh

In a prophecy against Moab, God commented that "Chemosh [the Moabite deity] will go into exile with his priests and officials" (Jeremiah 48:7 HCSB). King Solomon built a high place for Chemosh in 1 Kings 11:7.

Cush is one of Noah's grandsons (Genesis 10:1,6). Colossae was the city that Paul wrote the book of Colossians to (Colossians 1:2). Chris Nolan is a British movie producer whose names I pushed together so that you might think it was the name of an ancient pagan deity (No Bible reference for that).
5. Which one of these people was one of the spies that Moses sent out to spy out the land of Canaan?

Answer: Caleb

God had told the Israelites to enter and conquer Canaan (pronounced Cā-năn). Moses sent twelve spies to spy out Canaan. Ten of the spies said that the people of Canaan were strong and they shouldn't enter. Caleb said, along with Joshua, that they should enter the land and God would give it to them.

The Israelites sided with the ten and refused to enter. God punished them by making them stay in the desert for another 40 years. He also killed the ten spies who had discouraged the people from entering Canaan. Reference: Numbers 13-14.
6. While Moses was on the Mount Sinai (pronounced Sie-nie), the Israelites sinned by making and worshipping a gold image. What was it an image of?

Answer: calf

After Moses came down from the mountain, he became rather upset and he punished the people in a rather unpleasant way. He ground the calf into powder, put it on top of the stream that flowed down the mountain, and made the people drink it. Yuk, right? References: Exodus 32:1-6, Exodus 32:19-20, Deuteronomy 9:21
7. Which of these is a term used in most Bible translations for a promise God makes to a human?

Answer: covenant

According to 'The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy,' a covenant is "an agreement between God and his people, in which God makes promises to his people and, usually, requires certain conduct from them." God made a covenant with Abraham in Genesis 17, promising the land of Canaan to Abraham's descendants and requiring circumcision for all of his household. Another example is God's covenant to Noah not to flood the world in Genesis 9. Some modern translations apparently see 'covenant' as being an obscure term and use instead words like 'promise' and 'agreement.'

'Corantum' is made up. 'Camorra' is "a secret society organized in Naples, Italy, c. 1820, which became notorious for terror, blackmail, and violence," according to YourDictionary.com .
8. According to 1 Corinthians in the King James Version, knowledge puffs a person up, but which of these attributes edifies a person?

Answer: charity

1 Corinthians 8:1 in the King James says, "Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth." The Holman Christian Standard says, "Knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up." Paul here warns about letting your knowledge make you arrogant so that you look down on others, and instead suggests that we love and support one another.
The book of Proverbs says that "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting" (Proverbs 31:30 HCSB).
While neither the words 'chaste' or 'chastity' are in the KJV or HCSB Bibles, Romans 13:13 does instruct us to "walk with decency, as in the daylight: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy" (HCSB).
Chi (pronounced chē) is "the vital force believed in Taoism and other Chinese thought to be inherent in all things" (American Heritage Dictionary).
9. What was the name of the high priest who advised that Jesus should be executed for the good of the people?

Answer: Caiaphas

The priests and teachers who worked in the temple had called a meeting in order to decide how they should deal with Jesus. Caiaphas, the high priest, advised that "it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish" (John 11:50 HCSB). John's account says that he did not say this on his own but rather he was prophesying that Jesus was going to die for the good of the scattered children of God. Reference: John 11:47-53
Cain was Adam's oldest son who killed his brother Abel.
Cephas was the Aramaic version of Peter's name.
Charles is the name of the main character from 'Peanuts' as well as the author of 'The Adventures of Oliver Twist,' but the name Charles is never used in the KJV or HCSB Bibles.
10. Paul wrote a letter to the church in which city that was allowing a man to have an immoral relationship with his father's wife?

Answer: Corinth

The Corinthian Christians were allowing a man in the church to be immoral, living with his dad's wife. They weren't even ashamed of it; in fact they were proud of it. In Paul's first letter to them (1 Corinthians) he was quite displeased about it and encouraged them to have the man removed and not associate with anyone who claimed to be Christian but was involved in seedy relationships. Reference: 1 Corinthians 5.
