Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The No. 71. Starting at Genesis 1:1, what is the seventy first verse in the Hebrew Bible and in the Old Testament?

Answer: Genesis 3:15

The seventy-first verse in the Hebrew Bible and in the Old Testament is Genesis 3:15. Genesis 1 has thirty-one verses and Genesis 2 has twenty-five verses for a total of fifty-six verses. Add on fifteen more verses -- taking you to Genesis 3:15 -- and you have seventy-one verses.

Incidentally, Genesis 3:15 tells of God talking to the serpent after it was successful in tempting Adam and Eve to eat forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.

To put the verse in context, here's how Genesis 3:14-16 reads in the NKJV:

"So the LORD God said to the serpent:
'Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.'
To the woman He said:
'I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be for your husband,
And he shall rule over you'."
2. The No. 72. In what book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament do you find this verse that contains the number seventy-two? "The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD'S tribute was seventy-two."

Answer: Numbers

The verse is found in Numbers 31:38. The 31st chapter of Numbers is an account of Moses sending 12,000 elite Israelite soldiers into battle with the Midiantes and after their subsequent victory, the division of the plunder.

To put Verse 38 into context, here's how Numbers 31:32-41 reads in the NKJV:
"The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, seventy-two thousand cattle, sixty-one thousand donkeys, and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately. And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep; and the LORD'S tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD'S tribute was seventy-two. The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD'S tribute was sixty-one. The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the LORD'S tribute was thirty-two persons. So Moses gave the tribute which was the LORD'S heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses."
3. The No. 73. Starting at Matthew 1:1, what is the seventy-third verse of the New Testament?

Answer: Matthew 4:8

Matthew 1 has twenty-five verses while Matthew 2 has twenty-three verses and Matthew 3 seventeen verses for a total of sixty-five verses. Add on eight more verses -- taking you to Matthew 4:8 -- and you reach the seventy-third verse of the New Testament.

Incidentally, Matthew 4:8 tells of Satan attempting to tempt Jesus after He had fasted for forty days and nights in the wilderness.

To put the verse in context, here's how Matthew 4:1-12 reads in the NKJV:
"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, 'If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.'

"But He answered and said, 'It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God'.'

"Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, 'If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
'He shall give His angels charge over you,'
and,
'In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone'.'

"Jesus said to him, 'It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God'.'

"Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, 'All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.'

"Then Jesus said to him, 'Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve'.'

"Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him."
4. The No. 74. What book in Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament do you find the following verse containing the number seventy-four: "The Levites: the sons of Jeshua and Kadmiel, of the sons of Hodaviah, seventy-four." (Hint: the book tells of building a wall around Jerusalem.)

Answer: Ezra

The verse is from Ezra with the verse in question coming from Chapter 2, Verse 40. The second chapter of Ezra provides details about the captives who returned from Babylon to build a wall around Jerusalem.

According to Ezra, a large number of people returned to Jerusalem for the project. Ezra 2:64-67, in the NKJV, states: "The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty, besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred men and women singers. Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five, their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and their donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty."
5. The No. 75. According to Genesis 12:4, what patriarch, at the age of seventy-five years, departed from Haran to Canaan with Lot?

Answer: Abraham

Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, is the correct answer. After arriving in Canaan, Scripture states the LORD told Abram that He would give the land to his descendants. After hearing the promise, Abram built an altar to the LORD.

Here's how Genesis 12:4-7, in the NKJV, reads: "So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

"Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, 'To your descendants I will give this land.' And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him."

Genesis 17 goes on to tell of the LORD making a covenant with Abram and giving him and his wife Sarai new names -- Abraham and Sarah.
6. The No. 76. Psalm 76 is different in the sense it wasn't written by David. Who wrote it?

Answer: Asaph

Asaph is the correct answer. For the record, there is no account of Daniel, Jeremiah or Amos, writing any of the Psalms, let alone Psalm 76.

In addition to writing Psalm 76, Asaph is also credited with writing Psalms 50, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82 and 83.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Asaph was one of the music leaders appointed by David.
7. The No. 77. According to Genesis 4:24, what murderer said if Cain was avenged seven fold, he would be avenged seventy-seven fold?

Answer: Lamech

Lamech, the second murderer in the Bible, is the correct answer. The account of Lamech confessing he murdered a man appears in the fourth chapter of Genesis, the same chapter in which the report about Cain killing Abel appears. In Genesis 4:23, Lamech tells his wives Adah and Zillah he killed a young man for injuring him.

The name of the victim is not disclosed and there are no other details. However, he states in Verse 24 "if Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."
8. The No. 78. Starting at Genesis 1, what is the seventy-eighth chapter in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament?

Answer: Exodus 28

The seventy-eighth chapter is Exodus 28. This one is relatively simple to figure out in the sense Genesis has fifty chapters. Add on twenty-eight chapters -- giving you a total of seventy eight -- and you end up at Exodus 28.

Exodus 28 tells of the garments the priests were to wear as they served at the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
9. The No. 79. Starting at Matthew 1:1, what is the seventy-ninth chapter in the New Testament?

Answer: John 11

The correct answer is John 11. Matthew has twenty-eight chapters while Mark has sixteen chapters and Luke has twenty-four, giving a total of sixty-eight chapters. Add on eleven chapters -- which takes you to John 11 -- and you have a total of seventy-nine chapters.

In the eleventh chapter of John, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead at Bethany, even though he had been in a tomb for four days. Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, the most well-known sisters in the New Testament.
10. The No. 80. According to Exodus 7:7, what man was eighty years old when he first spoke to the Pharaoh of Egypt?

Answer: Moses

Exodus 7:7 states, "And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh."

The two brothers appeared before the Pharaoh to request their people, the Israelites, be set from slavery in Egypt and given clearance to move to Canaan, known in Scripture as the Promised Land.

According to Scripture it would be a long, arduous process for Moses and Aaron to win the Pharaoh's permission, which was granted only after ten punishing plagues were unleashed on Egypt by God.

Scripture goes on to tell of it taking forty years for the Israelites to make their way to Canaan after getting permission to leave Egypt. Moses and Aaron, and their sister Miriam, died before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, according to Scripture.
