Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Then He said to Thomas, 'Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.'"

Answer: John 20:27

The verse is from John 20:27 and is part of a passage telling of the resurrected Christ appearing before Thomas for the first time. Previously, Thomas, one of the original Twelve Disciples, had scoffed at resurrection reports saying he would only believe the reports if he could put his finger in the wounds on Christ's hands and put his hand into the wound on Christ's side.

After examining the wounds, Thomas made the famous declaration, "My Lord and my God!" in John 20:28.
2. "Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish."

Answer: 1 Corinthians 13:8

The correct answer is 1 Corinthians 13:8, a verse which is part of the famous Love Chapter. 1 Corinthians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and addressed to members of the early church in Corinth.

Chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians is popular with millions of Christians around the world. The chapter is often read at weddings and funerals. For example, former British prime minister Tony Blair read the Love Chapter at the funeral for Princess Diana in 1997 in London.

For the record, Verse 8 in the NKJV ends with the two words 'vanish away'. However, the word 'away' is not featured in the verse due to space limitations with the format for match quizzes.
3. "Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, 'Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.'"

Answer: Acts 8:26

Acts 8:26 is the correct answer. The verse is part of a passage telling of Philip converting an Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity. The eunuch is not identified but according to Verse 27 in the NKJV, he was "of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians." When Philip encountered the man, he was riding in a chariot while studying Scripture by Isaiah. The passage goes on to tell of Philip riding along with the man and explaining the fulfillment of
prophecy through Jesus Christ.

Philip in this case is not to be mistaken with the Philip who was one of the original Twelve Disciples.
4. "...And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God..."

Answer: Luke 2:27-28

The verses Luke 2:27-28 are part of a passage telling of Simeon, an elderly man who was waiting for "the Consolation of Israel", as per Verse 25 in the NKJV. When Jesus was presented to Simeon, he was convinced Bible prophecy had been fulfilled.

For the record, Luke 2:27-28 reads this way in their entirety in the NKJV: "So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:"

The verses go on to quote Simeon as saying: "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel."

(Due to space limitations with the format for match quizzes, Verses 27 and 28 are featured in an edited version.)
5. "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Answer: Romans 10:9

The verse, a popular one with Christians around the world, is from Romans 10:9. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul emphasizes the need for Israel to be saved. For further details, see Romans 10:1-13.

Romans is one of thirteen books Paul is credited with writing. It was addressed to members of the early church in Rome.
6. "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

Answer: James 4:7

James 4:7 is the correct answer. To put the verse in context, here's how James 4:7-8 reads in the NKJV: "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

While the Book of James was written by a man named James, no one knows for certain who he was. Theologians have cited a number of different people with being the author, but the bottom line is James was an extremely common name in New Testament times.
7. "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation."

Answer: Colossians 1:15

The verse is from Colossians 1:15 and is part of a passage in which Paul states Christ and God are equal. To put the verse in context, here's how it reads with Verse 16 in the NKJV: "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him."

The book of Colossians was addressed to members of the early church in Colosse, an ancient city which is now part of Turkey. Using the NKJV, the city of Colosse is mentioned in Colossians 1:2 and no where else in the Bible. (In the NIV, the city appears as Colossae.)
8. "Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

Answer: 1 Timothy 4:12

1 Timothy 4:12 is the correct answer. Timothy was a young and timid worker in the early church who received two letters from Paul that are part of the New Testament. The letters are now known as 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy.

1 Timothy 4:12 is part of a passage in which Paul urges Timothy to not consider himself inferior because of his youth and to set an example for other believers.
9. "Yet for love's sake I rather appeal to you -- being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ."

Answer: Philemon 1:9

The verse in question is from Philemon 1:9 and its part of a passage in which Paul urges Philemon to accept back his run-away slave Onesimus as an equal in Christ. Paul and Philemon were old friends and after Onesimus ran away, Paul converted the slave to Christianity.

It is generally assumed Philemon lived in Colossae an ancient city in present day Turkey. According to Scripture, Paul and Onesimus met up in Rome, making the story of Philemon and Onesimus one of those 'small world stories'.
10. "Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666."

Answer: Revelation 13:18

Revelation 13:18 is the correct answer, of course. Scripture making reference to the number of the beast appears in only Revelation 13:8 and no where else in the Bible.

According to Revelation 13:16-17 in the NKJV, the rise of the beast will result in "both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads" and no one without the mark will be able to buy or sell.

Tradition holds Revelation was written by John, one of the original Twelve Disciples, while in exile on the island of Patmos.
