Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Ruth's homeland, and where the story begins?

Answer: Moab

Ruth was from Moab, though she married an Israelite man. When she decided to go to Judah with Naomi, she decided that she would also follow Naomi's God, and be one of her people.
2. What did Naomi ask her friends to call her?

Answer: Mara

After Naomi's husband and sons died, and she was left with no property or protection, she requested that she be called Mara (which means "bitter").
3. How were Ruth and Orpah related?

Answer: Sisters-in-law

Orpah took Naomi's advice when she told her daughters-in-law to return to their fathers' households where they would be provided for until they had the chance to remarry.
4. What did Ruth, Orpah, and Naomi have in common?

Answer: They were widows

All three of their husbands had died while in Moab. The cause is unknown.
5. What did Ruth insist on, despite what Naomi said she should do?

Answer: Going with Naomi to Judah

Ruth was choosing a life of poverty and danger by staying with Naomi. She would not be protected like she would have been if she went home to her father.
6. What did Ruth do to feed herself and Naomi?

Answer: Glean grain from what the harvesters left behind

The Judean culture specified that when a field was harvested, anything that was left behind should be left there for the poor to collect. Ruth had to follow the harvesters in order to pick up what they missed.
7. Who was the man who owned the field, and was a relative of Naomi?

Answer: Boaz

Boaz was a wealthy man, with his own land and servants. He was a distant relative of Naomi.
8. What did the land-owner do for Ruth?

Answer: Allowed her to harvest the grain alongside his servants

Boaz gave Ruth permission to actually harvest grain for herself, and not just pick up what was missed. He also warned his servants to protect her, as she would be very vulnerable to attacks as a single woman.
9. What did Ruth do to offer herself in marriage?

Answer: She lay down at his feet

Ruth came in to where Boaz was sleeping, uncovered his feet, and lay down beside them. This was to symbolize that she was asking for his protection through marriage.
10. What did Ruth's future husband have to do before he could marry her?

Answer: Request permission from a closer male relative

There was a man who was a closer relative to Naomi and Ruth, who would have the first rights to marry Ruth. As he had grown sons, if he had a male child with Ruth he would have to make him an heir as well. So the man gave up claim to her, and allowed Boaz to take her as his wife.
