Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jesus says, in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:24), "You cannot serve both God and Mammon". Who or what is Mammon?

Answer: personification of greed for wealth

Mammon is understood in the New Testament to refer to wealth and is often used to describe the lust for greater wealth, acquisitiveness and greed. "Mamona" is a Latin word for wealth. Later sources identify Mammon as an evil demon, perhaps one of the seven princes of Hell, perhaps a personification of Beelzebub. Peter Lombard calls Mammon "a devil". A spirit of personal greed has been described as Mammonism since the 19th century. This verse harmonizes with Jesus' earlier words in the Sermon on the Mount according to Matthew 6:21 "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" and with Saint Paul's observation in I Timothy 6:10 that "the love of money is the root of all evil".

3. When is the hymn "O Holy Night" most likely to be heard sung in Christian churches?

Answer: Christmas Eve

In 1843, to celebrate the renovation of the church organ, Placide Cappeau, a poet and wine merchant in Roquemaure, France, wrote a poem about Christmas Eve. Adolphe Adam then composed a tune specifically for this hymn. It was first performed by an opera singer, Emily Laurey, at the church. The original was in French, entitled "Minuit, chretiens." John Sullivan Dwight, a Unitarian minister, translated it into English in 1855. The English-language version begins "O holy night! The stars are brightly shining. It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth." Recordings have been released by Nat King Cole, Mahalia Jackson, Mannheim Steamroller, Patti LaBelle, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Josh Groban, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey and Martina McBride.

4. Who is the patron saint of fathers? He was a man who had a famous son.

Answer: Joseph

St. Joseph, of course, was the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Christ. The Bible states that Joseph was from Nazareth (Luke 2:4), and being from the lineage of David (Matthew 1:1-17), took his pregnant wife to Bethlehem to pay the taxes that were levied by Augustus. Eventually the family settled in Nazareth (Matthew 2:21-23), where Joseph made a living as a woodworker or carpenter. After finding the twelve year old Jesus in the temple, (Luke 2:41-51) Joseph is not mentioned again. It is assumed that he died before Jesus began his years of public ministry. In 1870 Joseph was proclaimed to be patron of the universal church by Pope Pius IX.

5. The nave is separated from the sanctuary in an Eastern Orthodox church by the "iconostasis". It is a sort of wall with a door in the middle through which the clergy enter and exit the area around the altar. What is meant by the term "icon"?

Answer: a sacred painting

An icon is a religious painting of Mary, Christ, an apostle, a saint or a biblical event. The term "icon" comes directly from the Greek "eikon" meaning image or resemblance. As used in the Orthodox and Western Catholic traditions, icons are thought of as windows or doorways into deep spiritual communion with God. Icons are revered not because they are themselves holy but rather that they are means to the holy. One sacred tradition holds that Saint Luke the Evangelist was the first iconographer. Many of the icons created in the Early Church were destroyed during the First Byzantine Iconoclasm (726-787) and the Second (814-842). Reformation attitudes toward icons have tended not to be charitable, some holding them to be idolatrous.

6. Which purported religion claims to worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but was found by a U.S. federal district court not to be a religion at all?

Answer: Pastafarianism

In Cavanaugh v. Bartlet, 178 F.Supp.3d 819 (2016), a prisoner in the Nebraska State Penitentiary sued the warden for depriving him of his religious liberties. Mister Cavanaugh wanted to wear full pirate's regalia around the prison as an exercise of his religion but was denied. The court found that Pastafarianism is a parody, a satire, but not a religion within the constitutionally-protected meaning of religion. Belief in the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) was asserted as a ground for either prohibiting the teaching of the "intelligent design" theory of creation or for requiring that the FSM be given equal time in schools.
