Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first chapter of James, how does James state that we should ask God for wisdom? (verses 5 and 6 in the King James Version)

Answer: in faith

James is letting us know that faith is the key to obtaining wisdom from God.
He notes in verse 7 that anyone who does not ask in faith is in essence wasting his own time.

2. According to James 1:12 in the NIV, what will "the one who perseveres under trial... having stood the test" receive?

Answer: The crown of life

He goes on to say that "the Lord has promised to those who love Him." Essentially what James is saying is that yes, there will be problems and hard times in life; turn to God.

3. James chapter 3 (NKJV) is a perfect example of the straightforward imagery that makes James one of my favorite New Testament books. The author "punches", in a sense, when describing the trouble that the tongue can create. How does James refer to the tongue?

Answer: As an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

The verse of James 3:8 (NKJV) supplies this answer.
James also says the tongue is not tameable, and we use it to bless God and curse men. James also says, in verse six of the same chapter, that the tongue defiles the whole body and it is set on fire by hell.

4. In Chapter 2, how does James describe those who are poor in the eyes of the world (NIV)?

Answer: rich in faith

In verse 5, (NIV) James is arguing against favouritism here. He says that we should treat everyone as equals, rather than favouring the rich, because we are all equal in God's sight.

5. In the 4th chapter of James we are clearly instructed to rebuke the devil so that he will flee from us. (KJV)

Answer: False

The 7th verse of James 4 states quite differently.
In the King James Version we can read the following:
First, we are instructed to submit ourselves to God. Then, after having completely submitted to His will, we are told to RESIST the devil, and he will flee from us.

A very important distinction is made here, I feel.
We are not stronger than the devil, but if we are submissive to God, He is stronger and fights our battles against the evil one for us, as we show our obedience to God.

6. According to James 4:17 (NIV) if you know what to do and don't do it, it's okay?

Answer: False

The New International Version of the Bible states the text this way; "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them." This makes sense because it does no good to what know what to do and then not do it.
For example, I know I should help others. If I see an older person struggling with some grocery bags and I say "I will pray for you." That is not helpful.
Praying is important, but what she may really need is someone to carry those bags for her.

7. According to James 5:14 if someone is sick what should be done? The New King James version was used for this question.

Answer: Let him call for the elders of the church.

James 5:14. The chapter also states that the prayer of faith will save the sick, and if he has committed sins he will be forgiven.

8. According to James 4:10 in the KJV what does one need to do to have the Lord lift one up?

Answer: humble yourself in the sight of the Lord

The King James Version states this very simply.
"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
James 4:10

While all the other choices may be considered as good options, humbling ourselves to God is what James is pointing out in this verse.

9. James 5:16 says "the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." Who does James give as an example in this chapter? (NKJV)

Answer: Elijah

James 5:17 tells of Elijah's praying that no rain would fall, and there was a drought for three and a half years. Then Elijah prayed FOR rain, and the normal weather cycle began again.

10. Where is "The Judge" standing according to James 5:9 in the NIV?

Answer: At the door

This is found after James says "Don't grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged." The Judge refers to Jesus.
