Born in 1381, this saint had wanted to enter a convent even as a child. Her parents, however, insisted she marry. When her husband and sons died, she entered the convent. Through miracle, Saint Rita Of Cascia was given a thorn of Jesus when she prayed to suffer as He suffered. She died in 1457.

Saint Bonaventure was named by Saint Francis Of Assisi. Named John at birth, Saint Bonaventure was gravely ill as a baby. His mother asked Saint Francis Of Assisi to pray for him. While praying for the baby, Saint Francis Of Assisi foresaw the greatness of what was to come from the baby.

He exclaimed, 'O buona ventura', which means, `Oh good fortune.' Saint Bonaventure was born in Tuscany, Italy in 1221. He died in 1274.

Following conversion, he became the popular saint, Saint Augustine of Hippo.

Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, born in Poland in 1894, was arrested twice after the 1939 invasion of Poland. In 1941 he was sent to Auschwitz where he died by offering himself for extermination in place of a young husband and father. He was canonized in 1981. Edith Stein, who also perished at Auschwitz, has also been canonized, while the Titus Brandsma, another victim of Auschwitz has been beatified - that is, formally recognized as a martyr for his faith.
