Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jesus told many parables during His lifetime. Why did the various religious leaders want to kill Jesus after He told a parable in Matthew 21?

Answer: They perceived that He spoke about them (and it wasn't good)

This parable concerned wicked vineyard keepers who stole the fruit of the vineyard from their master. The master sent servants to them to get his fruit, but they killed the servants, so the master at last sent his son. The greedy vineyard keepers then murdered the son and were happy because they thought now they would keep the vineyard forever. Of course, in the end the master came and destroyed them for having killed his son.

The listening religious rulers understood that Christ was accusing them of being the wicked vineyard keepers. Let's say they were pretty mad about it.
2. The offended religious leaders tried to outwit Jesus through a controversial political topic. What pressing issue from Jewish politics of the time did they ask Jesus about in Matthew 22?

Answer: Paying taxes

It should have been a major blow to Christ's popularity, no matter how He answered. The people did not like paying taxes, and the Romans would have arrested and punished anyone who spoke against paying them. It should have been the perfect question.
3. In order to answer the political question in Matthew 22, Jesus asked the religious leaders to show Him something. What did He want to see before answering the question?

Answer: A coin

He asked to see a Roman penny. The coin was stamped with the image of the Roman emperor on it, and Jesus asked them to tell Him whose picture was on it before answering their question. He then told them to give Caesar's things to Caesar and God's things to God. The coin was Caesar's and made by Caesar, so they could give Caesar back his coin, but God wanted them to give Him the things that were His.

(See Matthew 22.)
4. Jesus' answer to the religious leaders' political question really stumped them. A religious group called the Sadducees came next to speak to Jesus. What distinguished this group from other groups according to Matthew 22:23?

Answer: They said there is no resurrection

This group may have been trying to get Jesus to join their side, but they were less than convincing. They did not believe in life after death, and therefore were in sharp dissent with the Pharisees, who believed there was a resurrection. (See Acts 23:6-10 -- the groups nearly tore the Apostle Paul in pieces over the issue.)
5. In Matthew 22, the Sadducees came up with a brilliant story to illustrate their point about their beliefs. What was their story about?

Answer: A childless woman who had been widowed seven times and then died

Their story is about a woman who marries seven brothers, one after another, and they all keep dying on her. She is left in the end with no child, and she dies too -- as the story goes. This is supposed proof for the idea that there cannot be a resurrection. (See Matthew 22:24-28.)
6. What did Jesus say was the problem with the Sadducees' whole story in Matthew 22?

Answer: They didn't know what they were talking about

Christ's answer was simply that they had made a mistake because they didn't know "the Scriptures" or "the power of God." He quoted God as having said, "I am the God of Abraham" and various other dead patriarchs, and reminded them that God was the God "of the living" not "the dead." (Matthew 22:29-32)
7. Now the Pharisees came back to tempt Jesus, sure that they would do better than their Sadducee counterparts. What deep theological question did they ask Christ in Matthew 22:36?

Answer: What is the greatest commandment?

From what I understand, they had been debating this whole question between themselves for some time. The most popular answer was "the Lord is one Lord" or "one God", from the various sources I have read. Jesus's answer was a little different, however. Read on to Matthew 22:37-40...
8. Jesus's reply to the Pharisees' question covered, He said, the whole Law. What was His answer, given in Matthew 22:37?

Answer: Love the Lord thy God

If you chose "Love thy neighbor as thyself", you were very close. Jesus said it was the second great commandment in this passage (Matthew 22:38), and it was part of the greatest commandment in another. But if one loves the Lord, he is to love his brother also, as it says in James.
9. Now it was time to turn the tables. What question about their looked-for Christ did Jesus ask the Pharisees in Matthew 22:42?

Answer: Whose son is he?

They answered "David's." He then left them to think about the question of why, then, did David call his son "Lord." Their response was simply not to ask Him any more questions. (Matthew 22:40-46)
10. Did Christ know that the Pharisees and Sadducees were trying to tempt or trap Him in Matthew 22?

Answer: Yes

Yes, Christ asked why they tempted Him in verse 18 of Matthew 22. "But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?"
