Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who succeeded Pope John Paul II?

Answer: Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict was born Joseph Ratzinger. He succeeded Pope John Paul II as the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
2. What is the name of the rope/cord used to fasten the alb?

Answer: cincture

The cincture is also used to secure the stole to the alb. Its colour may change depending on the time of year. (The colour usually changes when it is worn by the laity, but usually remains white when it is worn by a priest.)
3. What is the colour worn by the Priest during ordinary time?

Answer: green

Green is used for most of the year. Red is used for special days (i.e. Good Friday). Purple is used during Lent and gold is worn on Solemnities and special feast days of Saints (i.e. Patron Saint of the country or parish).
4. In the Mass how many Sundays are there in ordinary time?

Answer: thirty-three or thirty-four

There are also four Sundays of Lent, six Sundays of Easter and many days separating the ordinary time.

The number of Sundays in Ordinary Time depends on where Easter falls in the year.
5. Can one man receive all seven sacraments?

Answer: Yes

It is possible for one man to receive all seven sacraments. Anyone can receive the first four also known as the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Penance and Confirmation). Then a man can be married and, after his wife dies, he is no longer married and can then receive the sacrament of Holy Orders. Then when he is dying he can receive the anointing. (Women can only receive six of the sacraments due to the fact that woman can not be ordained as Priests.)

Another way of achieving all seven sacraments is to be ordained a permanent deacon while married, although one cannot generally be married after becoming a deacon.
6. What is the position a man may hold while training to be a Priest which allows him to read the Gospel at Mass and assist the Priest?

Answer: deacon

The ranks begin at altar server then acolyte. There are two ways of becoming a deacon. The first way is you begin training to become a Priest at a Seminary, then you are ordained a deacon as part of your training and then eventually be ordained a Priest.

The second way is you train only to become a deacon and remain one for the rest of your life. Many people get confused and believe that Altar servers are deacons but they are actually not.
7. What is the proper way to address a Cardinal?

Answer: 'Your Eminence'

'Your Eminence' is the proper way to address a Cardinal. A Cardinal normally also serves as the Archbishop of a place (e.g., Sydney). Besides having to wear a new outfit, a Cardinal's only extra power is to elect a new Pope. A Bishop would be addressed as 'Your Excellency' in Europe and as 'My Lord' in most English speaking countries, an Archbishop (who is not a Cardinal) as 'Your Grace', a Patriarch as 'Your Beatitude' and the Pope as 'Your Holiness' or 'Holy Father'.
8. What is the sacred compartment in a Church where unused consecrated hosts are placed for storage to be used in the next Mass?

Answer: tabernacle

The tabernacle is usually located at the back of the Altar so that is easy for the Priest or acolyte to access it. The unused hosts are placed in a ciborium, which is also used to hold the hosts during the consecration and the giving out of Communion.

The paten is the plate on which the large host is placed on during Mass. The chalice is a cup in which the water and wine are placed in to be consecrated and distributed. The pyx is used to carry a few consecrated hosts to sick members of the congregation who cannot come to church to receive them.
9. Which Pope began the Second Vatican Council?

Answer: Pope John XXIII

Pope Paul VI was the Pope who closed the council because Pope John XXIII died during the proceedings. Pope Paul VI is also the Pope who enforced the council's recommendations.
10. Do Catholics venerate Mary?

Answer: Yes

Catholics do not worship Mary. She is venerated as the mother of Jesus Christ. The Hail Marys are prayers through her, but all prayers are directed to God.
Roman Catholics recognise three different levels of veneration: Dulia (that accorded to saints), Hyperdulia (veneration of Mary), and Latria (the level of veneration given only to God).
