Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At King Herod's birthday party, what did Herod promise Herodias' daughter that he would give her?

Answer: Anything she asked for

"On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked." - Matthew 14:6-7 (NIV). On her mother's advice, she asked for the head of John the Baptist.

2. Mary gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem. Why Bethlehem?

Answer: Joseph took Mary there for a census.

Luke 2:1-5 says, "In those days Caesar Augustus published a decree ordaining a census of the whole world...Everyone went to register, each to his own town. And so Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to David's town of Bethlehem--because he was of the house and lineage of David--to register with Mary, his espoused wife, who was with child."

You may recognize this reading from Christmas. I find it amazing that the Roman Emperor had a role to play in Christ's birth.

3. To whom did Jesus say, "Neither do I condemn you; go and do not sin again" (Revised Standard Version)?

Answer: The woman taken in adultery (John 8:1-11)

The woman in this story had been caught in the act of adultery, and according to the Law of Moses, she was to be stoned to death. (No mention is made of the adulterous man, who should also have been up for stoning, or at least required to make restitution to the woman's husband.) The religious leaders brought her case to Jesus intending to entrap Him, expecting that He would either condemn her (whereupon they could claim that He was lacking in mercy, and charge Him with inciting the death penalty in contravention of Roman law) or demand her release (whereupon they could claim that He failed to observe the Mosaic Law, and was Himself liable to condemnation).

Jesus' judgment was simply this: "Let he who has not sinned himself, throw the first stone." Shamed, they left the scene one by one, and abandoned the woman to Jesus' disposition.

4. Who cleverly - and determinedly - said to Jesus, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."? (Matthew 15:21-28 NKJV)

Answer: The Canaanite woman from the Tyre-Sidon region

The Canaanite woman came appealing to Jesus to restore her daughter from demon-possession. Jesus refused, saying that His earthly mission was only to the Jews, and challenging her by asking whether He should take the children's food and give it to the 'dogs' (non-Jews). Her clever response both pleaded for mercy and revealed her determination and her faith in Him. Faced with this, He could not refuse her. Her daughter was healed at that same moment.

The same story is recorded in Mark 7:24-30, where the woman is described as specifically 'Syro-Phoenician' rather than the more general 'Canaanite'.

5. Of what woman's actions did Jesus say, "wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her." (Mark 14:9, NKJV)?

Answer: The anonymous woman who anointed His head with spikenard in the house of Simon the Leper

This incident is recorded in both Mark 14:3-9 and Matthew 26:6-12. The disciples objected to the shocking 'waste' of such expensive perfumed oil, and Jesus rebuked them. "Leave her alone," He told them, stating that she had done a good thing - and would always be remembered for it.

6. Jesus often traveled with His disciples, teaching and instructing them in parables and in actions. There was one household at which He always felt welcome and He frequently visited his friends there. The mistress of the house had a sister, who once was so intently listening to the teachings of Jesus, that she sat at His feet, enraptured as He spoke and taught in the home. The woman of the house, who was primarily focused on the creature comforts of her guests, asked Jesus to make her sister lend a hand in helping with the workload. According to Luke 10:38-42, what was this woman's name?

Answer: Martha

In verse 38 of this passage we see that "they went" - the "they" being not just Jesus, but a number of his disciples as well. A few verses before this, and in fact throughout the chapter, we see that Jesus had been teaching his disciples by object lessons and through parables (stories).

Jesus' response to His well-respected friend was not what she expected, perhaps. He complimented her on her kindness and hospitality to her guests, but he also pointed out to her that her sister, Mary, was thinking more critically about the topics that He was teaching on. There is no record that He asked Mary to do as her sister requested.

In fact, the implication seems to be that he would have preferred Martha to have sat down and given Him her undivided attention as well.

The King James Version words His response to her this way:

"And Jesus answered and said unto her, 'Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things; But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.'" (verses 41 and 42.)

7. Luke 7: 11-17 tells the story of Jesus raising a widow's only son from the dead. What's the name of the widow?

Answer: No name is given

No name is given for the widow, or for her only son. Luke, the writer of the Gospel, states the miracle was performed in Nain, making this the only time the community is mentioned in the Old Testament and the New Testament. (Nain is about ten miles southeast of Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus.) Luke 7:16 states that after Jesus resurrected the son from the dead, the people "were all filled with awe and praised God." The scene must have been something to behold. People were no doubt crying for joy while others were laughing uncontrollably. And then there must have been a wonderful, ecstatic embrace between the widow and her only son while everyone looked on in awe.

8. How many demons does the Bible say that Jesus cast out of Mary Magdalene?

Answer: Seven

Luke 8 says that Jesus went from town to town performing miracles of all kinds. It says that the twelve were with him, as well as some women who supported them. One of these women was Mary Magdalene out of whom, according to verse 2, Jesus had cast seven demons.

9. In the book of Luke, we are told about a holy old woman whom God greatly blessed by allowing her to see Christ when he was taken to the temple as a baby. What was the name of this prophetess?

Answer: Anna

Luke 2:36-38 says, "There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem."

Just prior to Anna, a holy old man named Simeon was also given the privilege to see and even hold the infant Jesus.

After these two Apostles also saw that Christ's body was missing, they left and she was alone at the tomb. Then a man, whom she thought was a gardener but was really Jesus, asked her why she was weeping. Who was this woman?

Answer: Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene asked where the body of Jesus had been put. Then Jesus called her by name and she knew Him. Mary knew that Jesus Christ, the Lord, was risen from the grave just as He promised. This is told in the Gospel of John, Chapter 20.
