Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The wearing away of soil and rock by the action of streams, glaciers, waves, wind, underground water, and gravity.

Answer: Erosion

One type of erosion is the freeze-thaw erosion. This happens when water seeps into cracks and we all know when water freezes, it expands. This makes the crack bigger so next time, even more water seeps in and freezes, and pieces can break away.
2. The laying-down of rock-forming material by any natural agent.

Answer: Deposition

Deposition is the end of transportation.
3. Conversion of newly deposited sediment into a solid rock.

Answer: Lithification

The end product is sedimentary rock.
4. Process of exposing previously buried rock at the Earth's surface by removal (erosion) of the material on top of it.

Answer: Exhumation

Think of it this way: when we talk about exhuming a body, we are taking the earth off that person.
5. Naturally occuring molten rock material generated and found within the Earth.

Answer: Magma

Lava is just Magma above the Earth's surface.
6. Rock formed by cooling and solidification of lava above the Earth's surface.

Answer: Extrusive Igneous Rock

It's extrusive because it isn't formed until it is *extruding* from the Earth.
7. A layered rock resulting from the consolidation of sediment.

Answer: Sedimentary Rock

A big hint is sediment - the little pieces get 'cemented' together and form sedimentary rock.
8. Destructive process by which rocks are changed on exposure to atmospheric agents at or near the Earth's surface with little or no transport of loosened or altered material.

Answer: Weathering

Think of it this way: When you don't 'weather-proof' your deck, the colour starts to fade.
9. Solid fragmented material transported and deposited that forms in layers of loose, unconsolidated material.

Answer: Sediment

10. Emission of magma onto the Earth's surface.

Answer: Extrusion

Hint: It is extruding to the surface from below.
