Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This kind of number is divisible by only one and itself. The first few examples are 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11.

Answer: Prime

There are an infinite number of primes. The largest known in September 2003, when this quiz was written, was (2^13,466,917)-1. It is 4,053,946 digits long. By 2013, this was improved to (2^57,885,161)−1, a 17,425,170 digit number, over four times as long!
2. What is the set of positive numbers that results in whole numbers when raised to the power of one-half?

Answer: Square

Raising to the power of one half gives the square root of the number. Only square numbers have whole numbers as square roots. Not too much is interesting about these! Here are the first few: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, etc.
3. What is the name for the type of number that cannot be written as a ratio of two integers?

Answer: Irrational

Examples of these are pi (3.1415926535...), e (2.718281828...), and the square root of 2 (1.414213562...).
4. This kind of number is equal to the sum of its positive factors, excluding itself. The first 3 examples are 6, 28, and 496.

Answer: Perfect Number

To date there are fewer than a hundred known perfect numbers. The next three are 8128, 33550336, and 8589869056. Eventually they become unbelievably gigantic, and only discoverable through the use of super computers. One interesting point: so far, all known perfect numbers end in either a 6 or an 8.
5. Real numbers are rational, irrational, whole, and imaginary.

Answer: False

Real numbers are not imaginary!
6. The numbers 3, 7, 31, and 127 are what?

Answer: Mersenne Primes

Mersenne Primes are prime numbers that take the form of (2^n)-1. It is interesting to note that n is must also be prime for this to work. The next 3 are: 8191, 131071, and 524287.
7. What group of numbers does the letter "i" represent?

Answer: Imaginary Numbers

The letter "i" represents (-1)^0.5 - the basic imaginary number.
8. Since every even number is divisible by 2, there are no even prime numbers.

Answer: False

The only even prime number is the number 2.
9. The number 12 has 6 factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. If you add up those factors you will get 28. Because of this fact, and the special properties of 6 and 28, the number 12 is called a _______ number.

Answer: Sublime

A number is sublime if its number of factors and the sum of those factors are equal to perfect numbers. For example: 12 has 6 factors (the number 6 is perfect) and those numbers add to 28 (28 is perfect). Thus, the number 12 is sublime.

There is only one other known sublime number (it is also the second sublime number, 12 being the first):

6086555670238378989670371734243169622657830773351885970528324860512791691264

Crazy huh?
10. What is extremely special about these two numbers: 220 and 284? They are ______ pairs.

Answer: Amicable

Amicable Pairs are 2 numbers where the sum of their positive proper divisors equals the other number -> 220: 1+2+4+5+10+11+20+22+44+55+110 = 284 and 284: 1+2+4+71+142 = 220
This only occurs one time in all possible combinations below 1,000. The next smallest set is 1184 and 1210.
