Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who reigned as middleweight champion through most of the 1970s?

Answer: Carlos Monzon

Carlos Monzon was an Argentinian wonder. He was in second place for Middleweight title defenses, behind Bernard Hopkins. Monzon had beaten both Briscoe and Valdes during his 14 defense reign.
2. For the "Rumble in the Jungle" Ali-Foreman fight, where in the jungle (Africa) was it?

Answer: Zaire

Ali-Foreman was promoted by Don King. He raised enough money for each fighter, more than Joe Louis or Rocky Marciano made in their entire careers. The fight took place in October 1974.
3. Where was the first Ali-Frazier bout held?

Answer: Madison Square Garden

The Garden was completely sold out, and people crowded around for more than a block, trying to get in. The people definitely got their money's worth if they bought a ticket, as Ali and "Smokin'Joe" had a classic, with Frazier winning a 15-round decison. The fight took place in March 1971.
4. Which of the following did Bob Foster defeat for the Light Heavyweight title?

Answer: Dick Tiger

Foster, widely recognized today as the hardest hitting light heavyweight of all-time, was fighting Tiger on fairly even terms until the third round, when Bob landed an amazing left hook that stretched out Tiger, a great champion in his own right, out on the floor.
5. What was Bob Foster's record against heavyweights?

Answer: 1-8

His eight career losses were all against heavyweights. His sole heavyweight win was against Hazelton on September 2, 1977.
His career record was 56 wins, eight losses and one draw (46 wins were by knockout). He never lost his light-heavyweight crown in the ring. He retired undefeated at that weight.
6. Did Carlos Monzon and Emile Griffth ever fight against each other?

Answer: Yes

Monzon and Griffth fought twice. Monzon won a decision the first time, and knocked Griffth out in the 14th the second time.
7. Roberto Duran was lightweight champion through the 70s. Who did he defeat for the title?

Answer: Ken Buchanan

Although Buchanan was a very slick, accomplished boxer, he was utterly destroyed by Duran.
8. In 1975, Alexis Arguello won the featherweight title from Ruben Olivares. When did he vacate the title?

Answer: 1977

Arguello beat Olivares by 13th round knockout, and defended three times against Leonel Hernandez, Roberto Riasco, and Royal Kobayashi. He knocked out Riasco and Kobayashi, and won an easy decison over Hernandez.
9. When Rodrigo Valdes fought Bennie Briscoe, who won the first fight?

Answer: Valdes, Decison

Valdes, who would be recognized as one of the best ever if he had not been overshadowed by Carlos Monzon, decisoned the extremely tough Briscoe. He later knocked him out, and outpointed him in their third fight.
10. Who was Joe Frazier's manager?

Answer: Yank Durham

Durham managed Frazier throughout his career. Dundee was Ali's trainer, Futch was Frazier's trainer not manager, and Mercante was simply a referee.
