Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first boxer to win the world lightweight title three times shared his name with that of a president. Who was he?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

Born in 1923, Jimmy Carter won 81 of his 120 bouts. He KO'd Ike Williams, decisioned Lauro Salas, and KOed Paddy DeMarco to win the lightweight title three times, all in the space of four years.
2. This all-time great held the WBC and then the IBF heavyweight titles from 1978 to 1985, before losing to Michael Spinks. Along the way he beat a multitude of greats like Muhammad Ali, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers and Leon Spinks. He went on to lose five more fights, however, including losses to Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. Who is he?

Answer: Larry Holmes

Holmes is another fighter who kept trying way past his prime, and lost every title shot he had after originally losing the belt. He was still great though, winning all his non-title bouts but one after that.
3. What was South Carolina heavyweight James Smith's nickname?

Answer: Bonecrusher

A colorful figure who racked up losses to Larry Holmes, Tony Tubbs, Tim Witherspoon, Marvis Frazier, Mike Tyson, and Razor Ruddock, among others.
4. What heavyweight who held the WBO title through 1991, until he was stripped for refusing a mandatory challenge, had the nickname 'Merciless'?

Answer: Ray Mercer

Okay, he wasn't all that merciless, since he let Michael Moorer off the hook. A couple of months later, Mercer was beaten by an aging Larry Holmes.
5. Enough of those lumbering old-timers. See if you're up on modern events. Who beat Zab Judah in November of 2001 to unify the junior welterweight (aka 'super lightweight') title?

Answer: Kostya Tszyu

The Russian-born Australian dropped Judah in round two. Some people say ref Jay Nady stopped the fight early, but I say better safe than sorry. When you fall down twice from one punch, it's over.
6. On September 30, 2001, who KOed Felix Trinidad in the twelfth round to unify the middleweight title?

Answer: Bernard Hopkins

Known as 'The Executioner,' Hopkins surprised all but a select few by showing himself to be a boxer rather than a brawler, ready to rely on footwork and adapt his strategies in the ring.
7. What light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, now an announcer for Showtime, announced his retirement after being KO'd by Evander Holyfield in May of 1996?

Answer: Bobby Czyz

Czyz helt the IBF light heavyweight title from 1986 to 1987. He was WBA cruiserweight champ 1991-1992. Czyz shouldn't feel too bad about the loss to Holyfield --- later that year, 'The Real Deal' also scored a win over Mike Tyson.
8. Every now and then, boxing bouts are given nicknames just as fighters are. The great Sugar Ray Robinson fought Jake LaMotta six times, winning five of those bouts. Their sixth meeting, in 1951, is known by what name?

Answer: The St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Because it was held on February 14, naturally. Sugar Ray had 'The Bronx Bull' on the ropes in the 13th round, so the ref stopped it. The other answers are all Muhammad Ali fights.
9. What marvelous middleweight champion lost only three of his 67 fights, the final loss a split decision at the devastating hands of Sugar Ray Leonard?

Answer: Marvin Hagler

'Marvelous' Marvin's other two losses were on points early in his career, both of which were avenged with knockouts later. Oh, he was good, all right.
10. What featherweight, known as 'El Terrible,' won the WBC championship in February of 2001, and as of November 2001 is undefeated with 41 bouts?

Answer: Erik Morales

Morales won a unanimous decision over Guty Espedas.
