Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1969, John Madden was a very young man when he was chosen by owner Al Davis to be head coach of the Oakland Raiders. How old was he?

Answer: 32

He was only 32 at the time, which made him the youngest coach in the AFL (remember that 1969 was still prior to AFL/NFL merger).
2. What was John Madden's winning percentage as an NFL head coach?

Answer: 72.5% (103 W - 32 L - 7 T)

Madden had a relatively short coaching career - only ten years, but it was enough to get him elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
3. Madden was never a head coach at any level of football prior to being picked to lead the Raiders.

Answer: False

It was his first head coaching position in the PROS, but he was head coach at Hancock Junior College in the early 1960s. He moved on to San Diego State, where he was an assistant to Don Coryell. His first position with the Raiders was linebackers coach in 1967.
4. Following the 1976 season, Madden guided the Raiders to a championship, with a 32-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI. What was the Raiders' record during the regular season that year?

Answer: 13-1

Remember, only a 14-game season in those years! Their lone loss came in Week 4 when the Raiders were blown out on the road against the Patriots, 48-17. Oakland got revenge in the playoffs, however, by ousting the Pats in the first round.
5. John retired after the 1977 season when the Raiders came within a game of going back to the Super Bowl, but lost to the Broncos in the AFC Championship game. But the coach found a second career in broadcasting. What year did he call his first NFL game on television?

Answer: 1979

That's right! He only took one season off before jumping into the broadcast booth, where he remained for many years.
6. By 2007, John had worked for several networks as a broadcaster. Put those networks into the correct chronological order, as it corresponds to Madden's career.

Answer: CBS, FOX, ABC

Madden was employed by CBS for almost fifteen years. FOX lured him with a big money offer in 1994, and then switched to Monday Night Football on ABC (teamed with longtime partner, Al Michaels) in 2005.
7. John Madden has written a number of books. What was the title of his first book?

Answer: "Hey, Wait a Minute, I Wrote a Book!"

It was published in 1984. John frequently used NY Times sports columnist Dave Anderson as his co-author, and each of these four books listed became best sellers.
8. One of the well known facts about John Madden's life is that he prefered not to fly, and traveled instead in a luxuriously appointed tour bus (referred to as 'The MaddenCruiser'). What caused John's aversion to flying?

Answer: Claustrophobia

He flew all throughout his coaching years, but says he panicked after feeling closed in while on a 1979 flight, and he would not fly any longer. He then traveled everywhere in his bus.
9. What did John call the "greatest disappointment" of his coaching career?

Answer: Losing the controversial "Immaculate Reception" game in 1972

This happened in the 1972 AFC Divisional Playoff game. Franco Harris' miracle catch of a deflected pass allowed the Steelers to beat the Raiders in the final minute.
10. The 'Madden Curse' is a supposed phenomenon that has been discussed by football fans in recent years. It seems that any player featured on the cover of his video game ends up suffering a serious injury shortly thereafter or playing poorly during that season. Which of these players has not been an alleged "Victim of the Curse"?

Answer: LaDainian Tomlinson

Tomlinson has never been on a Madden cover, though he was offered the chance for 'Madden 2008', but turned it down. Some speculated it was due to the alleged 'Curse', though other reports claim it had more to do with the amount of money offered. The other three players all appeared on the cover and each struggled through a subpar and/or injury-plagued season in that same season. Vick in the 2004 version, McNabb in 2006 and Alexander in 2007.
