Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From 1954-1960, Jim Lee Howell helmed the Giants to three NFL title games. He was overshadowed by two future Hall of Fame coaches. His offense coach was the great Vince Lombardi. Who was his defense coach who later took the Dallas Cowboys to some Super Bowls?

Answer: Tom Landry

In the Giants' seven-season stretch with Howell, the team had a 53-27-4 record. They won the NFL title in 1956, then lost in 1958 and 1959. Lombardi, at the helm with the Packers, had a postseason record of 10-2 while taking Green Bay to six titles. Landry's postseason record was 21-16.
2. Who was the first head coach to take his team to six Super Bowls, with his first trip as a Baltimore Colt?

Answer: Don Shula

The other coaches were never associated with the Colts. Shula did it with two different teams. His first appearance was with his 1968 13-1 Baltimore Colts. The Colts lost to the Jets in the Super Bowl. Don helmed the Colts for seven seasons, then took his services to Miami for 26 seasons.

As a Dolphin, he took the team to five more Super Bowls. All totaled, Shula lost four of the six.
3. I coached the Steelers for 23 seasons. I was the first head coach to win four Super Bowls. Who am I?

Answer: Chuck Noll

From 1969-1991, Noll was a Pittsburgh fixture. Eight times during his tenure, the Steelers won 10+ games in a season. Their Super Bowls wins were via the '74, '75, '78, and '79 teams. Chuck had a 16-8 postseason record.
4. I began my pro football career as a Buffalo linebacker. I coached Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington, and the San Diego Chargers in 2005. In my first 20 seasons, I took my team to win 10+ games nine times. I just couldn't get any recognition because I just kept losing AFC Championship games. In 1993, I took the Chiefs to a 13-3 record, but lost in the first round of the playoffs. Who am I?

Answer: Marty Schottenheimer

Schottenheimer was Coach of the Year in 1986 with the Browns after taking them to a 12-4 season. After 10 seasons in Kansas City ending in 1998, Marty was employed by the Redskins for one season, before signing with the Chargers in 2002. He took the 2004 Charger team to a 12-4 record, but lost the Wildcard game to the Jets.
5. The Detroit Lions went to three consecutive NFL Championship games in the early 1950s. In 1956, the Lions barely missed the title game. With high hopes for the '57 season, their head coach shocked the football world by leaving the team during training camp. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed him without hesitation. Who was this coach?

Answer: Raymond 'Buddy' Parker

None of the others had any association with the Lions or Steelers. Parker never was able to take the Steelers to a championship game, but did come close in 1962 and 1963. He coached for 15 seasons from 1949-1964. He began his coaching career with the Chicago Cardinals.

After six seasons in Detroit, he helmed the Steelers for eight seasons. In 1957 under George Wilson, the Lions still won another championship, beating the Browns 59-14 without Parker.
6. Although this head coach never saw a Super Bowl, he was the 1974 Coach of the Year for his services with the Cardinals. In 1980 and 1981, he took the Chargers to two AFC Championship games but lost both. Who was this coach?

7. Who was the first head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 1950?

Answer: Lawrence 'Buck' Shaw

The others were all running backs, never played for the 49ers, and didn't play until the 1980s. Shaw coached the 49ers for their first five NFL seasons. He then jumped ship to coach the Philadelphia Eagles. In his eighth and final season in 1960, he finally made it to the NFL Championship against the Packers and went out on top, 17-13.
8. I had some big shoes to fill when I replaced Cleveland's Paul Brown in 1963. In my eight seasons with the Browns, I took them to five division titles and to four NFL Championship games. Who am I?

Answer: Blanton Collier

The others were all defensive linemen. Collier had the Browns from 1963-1970. Blanton and his 1964 Browns won all the marbles by defeating the Baltimore Colts, 27-0. His regular season career record was 76-34-2.
9. Vince Lombardi took his Packers to a Super Bowl I victory. Who was the opposing team's head coach?

Answer: Hank Stram

Stram's 1966 Kansas City Chiefs finished the regular season with a 11-2-1 record. They were defeated by the 12-2 Packers. Hank retired after 17 seasons in 1977, after a 3-11 New Orleans Saints season.
10. From 1920-1967, all but eight seasons saw this head coach of the Decatur Staleys, Chicago Staleys, then Chicago Bears, win the franchise's first NFL Championship in 1933. Who was this head coach?

Answer: George Halas

The first championship for the Bears came against the New York Giants, 23-21. The following season the Bears went a perfect 13-0, but the Giants had their revenge in the championship game, 30-13. 1942 saw another perfect season going 11-0, but lost the championship game to the Redskins.
