Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. June 22, 1983 in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil; 2016 Olympic Silver medalist; Partner of Barbara Seixas

Answer: Agatha

Like most Brazilian celebrities, especially athletes, Agatha Bednarczuk is popularly known by just her first name, Agatha. She and her partner, Barbara Seixas defeated Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross in the semifinals at the 2016 Olympic Games. This was seen as an upset even though Agatha and Barbara were higher seeded than Walsh-Jennings and Ross (by virtue of them being one of the home teams). Even more shockingly, Agatha and Barbara failed to secure the gold medal, despite the cheering crowd on their side, when they lost to Germany's Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst.
2. September 22, 1979 in Fort Lauderdale; Replaced Todd Rogers; Knocked out by the home team, Brazil, at the 2016 Olympic Games

Answer: Nick Lucena

After the 2012 Olympics, Phil Dalhausser's partner, Todd Rogers, retired (he would later return to the sport with a new partner). Dalhausser selected Nick Lucena as his new partner. The two had actually previously been partners briefly in the AVP Tournament.

Lucena and Dalhausser were seen as gold medal contenders at the 2016 Olympics, along with the home team Alison and Bruno of Brazil. However, Alison and Bruno unexpectedly lost a match during pool play causing the two teams to meet much earlier than expected with Brazil defeating the United States two sets to one.
3. September 30, 1973 in Santa Barbara, California; Former partner of Dalhausser; Won five consecutive AVP tournaments from 2007-2011

Answer: Todd Rogers

Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser were a dominate force on the beach volleyball circuit during their partnership between 2006-2012, winning numerous international championships, including Olympic gold in 2008 and five straight AVP tournaments. Rogers selected Dalhausser as his partner because of Dalhausser's height (6'9" or 2.06 meters) and potential, despite the fact that Dalhausser was relatively inexperienced at the time. Rogers thus served as teammate and coach to Dalhausser.

In 2006, Rogers won the "God of the Beach" Tournament.

He is sometimes called the "God" or "King of the Beach" but that is a title awarded to a different male beach volleyball player annually.
4. August 15, 1978 in Santa Clara, California; Won 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals between 2004-2012; Compete on the U.S. Indoor Volleyball team at the 2000 Olympics; Pregnant during the 2012 Olympics

Answer: Kerri Walsh Jennings

Kerri Walsh Jennings and her partner Misty May-Treanor are often called the greatest beach volleyball pair of all time, male or female. They dominated the Olympic Tournament from 2004-2012, losing only one set in the Olympics together. Walsh Jennings won the bronze at the 2016 Olympics with her new partner April Ross after being upset by Agatha and Barbara of Brazil in the semifinals.

Her first Olympic appearance was in 2000 for the indoor volleyball team. The team finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match. Walsh Jennings was temporarily suspended from those games because of a false positive drug test. However she was later reinstated. During the 2012 London Olympics, Walsh Jennings was five weeks pregnant with her third child, Scout Margery.
5. May 6, 1991 in Rome; Upset Dalhausser/Rogers at the 2012 Olympics; Silver medalist at the 2016 Olympics with Paolo Nicolai

Answer: Daniele Lupo

The defending gold medalists from the 2008 Olympics, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers were expected to medal again in 2012, if not win the gold. However, Lupo and Nicolai pulled off a 2-0 upset in the Round of 16. This was notable because an Italy did not have a developed beach volleyball program. Lupo and Nicolai then lost in the Quarterfinals to Nummerdor and Schuil of the Netherlands.

Lupo and Nicolai returned to the Olympics in 2016 when they were almost eliminated during pool play but managed to win the Lucky Loser tournament to advance to the Quarterfinals. The made it all the way to the gold medal match, but ultimately claimed the silver when they lost to Brazil's Alison and Bruno. This was Italy's first ever medal in beach volleyball.
6. December 7, 1985 in Vitoria, Brazil; Nicknamed the Mammoth; 2016 Olympic gold medalist with partner Bruno

Answer: Alison

Alison's full name is Alison Conte Cerutti. He is nicknamed the Mammoth because he is big (6'8" or 2.03 meters/ 234 pounds or 106 kilograms at the time of the 2016 Olympics), powerful but slow on his feet. He also frequently sports rusty brown facial hair that resemble a wooly mammoth's hair.

In 2012, he won the Olympic silver medal with Emanuel Rego. He returned to the Olympics in his home country in 2016 with Bruno(Schmidt) to claim the gold medal against Italy's Lupo and Nicolai, defeating them in straight sets.

He won the 2008 Olympic gold medal in Beijing with his then partner Todd Rogers. Together, the duo was one of the most dominant male beach volleyball teams of all time.
8. June 20, 1982 in Costa Mesa, California; Replaced Misty May-Treanor; Won a silver medal with Jennifer Kessy at the 2012 London Olympics

Answer: April Ross

After Kerri Walsh Jennings won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics with Misty May-Treanor, she immediately asked April Ross to be her partner at the next Olympics. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Walsh Jennings and Ross dominated the competition until the semifinals where they unexpectedly lost to Agatha and Barbara of Brazil (even though the Brazilians were higher seeded than the Americans, it was still widely considered an upset.) This was the first lost in Walsh Jennings' Olympic career and April Ross' second.

The only other time April Ross had lost was during the 2012 Olympics when she and her partner Jennifer Kessy were defeated by Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor.
9. April 14, 1982 in Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Brazil; Married Liliane Maestrini. a fellow beach volleyball player, in 2013; Back-to-back Pan-American Games gold medalist; Finished 4th during the 2016 Olympics with Talita

Larissa returned with a new partner Talita (Antunes) for the 2016 Olympics where they were among the medal contenders. However, they finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match to Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross.

In 2013, Larissa married Liliane Maestrini, a fellow Brazilian and volleyball player. This relationship generated some controversy during the 2016 Olympics when an American announcer for the beach volleyball competition called Liliane Larissa's husband, when she was, in fact, her wife.
10. July 30, 1977 in Los Angeles; Won 3 straight Olympic gold medals from 2004-2012; Competed in first Olympics with Holly McPeak in 2000

Answer: Misty May-Treanor

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings won three consecutive Olympic gold in 2004, 2008 and 2012. After the 2012 Olympics, May-Treanor retired and thus the pair of May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings remain undefeated in Olympic play. Together, they only lost one set in their three Olympic Games together and that came in 2012 to Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, a team of sisters from Austria. Prior to teaming up with WalshJennings, May-Treanor was partnered with Holly McPeak for the 2000 Olympics but they did not medal.

In the 2004 Olympics, May-Treanor defeated her old partner in the semifinal match to advance to the gold medal match.
