Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Season 2005 was a particularly good one for the Eagles. Where did they finish?

Answer: Second

The Eagles came within a whisker of winning the Grand Final, to lose by only four points to the Sydney Swans. If they had won, it would have been the Eagles third premiership in 19 years, no mean feat. As it were, it was the Eagles forth Grand Final appearance, for a record of two wins and two losses.
2. 2005 coach John Worsfold once played for the Eagles.

Answer: True

John Worsfold in fact played 209 games for the Eagles with 138 games of them as captain. He led the Eagles to their first (and only) two flags in 1992 and 1994, and is regarded as one of the toughest players of his era.
3. Who captained the Eagles in 2005?

Answer: Ben Cousins

Ben Cousins had an outstanding 2005, not only leading his team to the Grand Final, he played his 200th game during the season, and also won the Brownlow Medal as best player of the year, the Eagles best and fairest award, as well as a host of media awards. Along the way he had to overcome a lot of unwanted attention surrounding his friendship with Northbridge identity John Kizon, resulting in police questioning over a nightclub stabbing.
4. Which of these players was not one of the four West Coast vice-captains in 2005?

Answer: Dean Cox

The Eagles elected four vice-captains for 2005, being star on-baller Chris Judd, injury-prone key forward/ruckman Michael Gardiner, dynamic wingman Andrew Embley, and out of favour utility Rowan Jones, who only played two games for the year.
5. One of the biggest sensations was star player Chris Judd. Despite being only 21 at the time, he won the 2004 Brownlow medal in his third season. Which of these awards did he win in 2005?

Answer: Norm Smith medal

The Norm Smith medal is awarded to the best player in the Grand Final, and Judd became only the forth player to win the award in a losing side since it was first presented in 1979.
6. Which Eagles player was involved in an incident with Steven Baker, that saw the Eagle suspended for a match?

Answer: Chris Judd

Judd had been dubiously tagged by Baker, who was holding his arms at stoppages and not letting him near the ball. Judd lashed out by swinging his elbow back, which connected to Bakers face with medium impact. It was the first time in Judd's career that he had missed a home and away season game.
7. Which of these players played in the 1994 Eagles premiership?

Answer: Drew Banfield

Drew Banfield, nicknamed 'Banners' or 'Trojan' by teammates and supporters, began his career in 1993, and played his 250th game in 2005. He was the sole survivor of the 1994 Eagles Premiership team.
8. In what year did Ben Cousins win the NAB Rising Star Award?

Answer: 1996

Cousins was touted as a future superstar after winning the award, and he did not disappoint.
9. Daniel Kerr finished second in the Brownlow in 2005, but where did he finish in the Eagles Best and Fairest?

Answer: 8th

Despite being only one vote behind the winner, Daniel Kerr had to settle for eighth place after missing four games during the season. The Eagles board gives every player a score each game, so even a few games missed makes a big difference.
10. Which Eagle did not get selected in the 2005 All Australian team?

Answer: Chris Judd

It came as a surprise to quite a few people when Chris Judd did not make the team, but there was a wealth of good midfielders in the AFL, and obviously they didn't think Judd was amongst the best. Judd polled 15 votes in the 2005 Brownlow Medal, to finish behind Winner Ben Cousins (20) and Runner-up Daniel Kerr (19) also from the Eagles.
11. How many Eagles players were selected in the 2005 International Rules Series?

Answer: None

The players and the club decided not to participate in the 2005 International Rules, a hybrid game of Gaelic Footy and AFL. The Australian team played Ireland in a two match series.
12. The Eagles played the Fremantle Dockers four times in 2005.

Answer: True

The two WA sides played once in the Pre-Season cup, twice during the regular season, and once in London for an exhibition match. The Eagles won three of the matches, losing the exhibition match.
13. One of the very best moments in the 2005 season was seeing the Eagles recover from a three quarter time deficit to defeat the Sydney Swans in the Qualifying Final. In that game, which player kicked a goal from outside 50 due to a controversial free kick?

Answer: Tyson Stenglein

Tyson Stenglein was awarded a free kick when Leo Barry charged towards him, ready for a pass, as Stenglein was standing on the mark. 'Stinger' moved to stop Barry running into free space, and Barry didn't change direction and ran into Stenglein. According to the laws of the game, an opposition player cannot interfere with the man on the mark, and Stenglein was awarded a free kick.

There was a lot of talk about it after the game, but at the time it took a great kick from Stenglein to score from 50 metres out.

The Eagles ended up winning the game by four points.
14. Who scored the Eagles' last goal in the Qualifying Final?

Answer: Ashley Sampi

Ashley Sampi scored a great goal from the pocket, kicking across his body and directing the ball to bounce into the goals. It put the Eagles nine points up and out of reach of the Swans, although it was tense in the last few minutes, with Eagles ruckman Dean Cox taking two saving marks in defence just before the siren sounded. Adam Hunter was also a hero, taking a huge mark in the fourth quarter, and kicking some very important goals.
15. The end result of the 2005 Grand Final was not exactly what the Eagles fans wanted, but the game itself was fantastic. The margin of four points made it the closest Grand Final since which year?

Answer: 1977

The last Grand Final decided by less then four points was the drawn 1977 Grand Final. North Melbourne beat Collingwood in the replay.
