Following this incident, the stewards announced that Renault would be excluded from the European Grand Prix in Valencia, however Renault successfully appealed this decision on the basis it was disproportionate in comparison to similar situations.

BMW Sauber were unable to sell the team by the deadline set out by the FIA, and therefore their slot on the 2010 grid has been taken by Lotus. Following the sale to Qadback, a request by the FIA to allow a 14th team to run required unanimous approval.

This has not been forthcoming and therefore the team was reliant on one of the existing manufacturers not being able to honour their commitment to race in 2010.

Luca was one of Ferrari's test drivers, but hadn't driven the current car before, and hadn't raced in Formula One in 10 years. He became the first Ferrari driver to qualify 20th and last for a race. After the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari recruited Giancarlo Fisichella to replace Luca.

Answer: Force India

Giancarlo led into the first corner, however a series of crashes lower down the field brought out the safety car on lap 1, and he was unable to fend of the KERS-assisted Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen when the race restarted. Even so, Fisichella was only 0.9 seconds behind race-winner Kimi, scoring Force India's first-ever points as a constructor.

Timo had come second in the previous week's Singapore Grand Prix and had been feeling unwell, so he was replace by Kamui Kobayashi in Friday's practice sessions.

Before the start of the race, television pictures showed Timo back in the garage, but with his leg elevated and in plaster.

Lewis, Adrian, and Heikki all started 17 races in 2007, 18 races in 2008, and as Japan was the 15th race in 2009, they all reached their 50th Grand Prix at the same time.

Sebastian Vettel did not complete a full season in 2007, driving a single race for BMW Sauber and then earning a race seat with Toro Rosso. At Japan 2009, he had only taken part in 40 Grand Prix.

There was a stoppage in the first part of qualifying. Arguably, the conditions hadn't really improved when it restarted, however when Tonio Liuzzi lost control on the main straight and crashed heavily at turn one, the session was stopped again.

In Nick's defence, he had come in to do his pit stop, however the rig failed to deliver any fuel into the car. He was intending to come straight back into the pits the next lap whilst the team changed the rig over, except there was insufficient fuel in the car to be able to complete the lap.

Answer: Heikki Kovalainen

Desperate to get ahead of compatriot Kimi Raikkonen, who had pitted at the same time, Heikki pulled away from his pit stop with the fuel hose still attached. Some fuel went over Raikkonen's car, which was briefly ignited by the Ferrari's exhaust. Both drivers were able to continue and both finished the race, although Kovalainen had 25 seconds added to his race-time.

Lewis Hamilton commented that it was nice for him to be at the Brazilian Grand Prix without the pressure of a championship at stake (having lost the championship at the 2007 race and won it at the last possible moment in 2008).

The Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey has been on the Formula One calendar since 2005 and there were plans for a race in India in the future. A Grand Prix in South Korea appears on the provisional Grand Prix calendar for 2010.

Lewis Hamilton had been dominant in his McLaren all weekend, however he was forced to retire with brake-issues after the first pit stop. Sebastian Vettel took the lead after his first pit stop and drove superbly to the flag. Mark Webber completed a Red Bull 1-2, coming in behind his teammate.

However, he was pushed hard to the finish by Jenson Button, who only finished 0.6 seconds behind the Australian driver.

Answer: Jenson Button

Jenson Button won six of the first seven races and led the championship all the way through. It was only after a superb drive at the Brazilian Grand Prix where, after starting 14th on the grid, he overtook several cars and secured the championship by finishing fifth with a race to spare.

Answer: Brawn GP

Brawn GP were formed following Honda's decision to leave Formula One at the end of the 2008 season. They won eight races in their maiden season (6 by Jenson Button and 2 by Rubens Barrichello) and won the constructor's title at the Brazilian Grand Prix. This was the first time a team had won the title in its maiden season.
