Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These two clubs come from which Southern European city?

Answer: Barcelona

The "Derbi barceloní" is the most played local derby in the Spanish top flight, with Barcelona and Espanyol having faced each other more than 170 times in La Liga. The rivalry dates back to 1929, when the clubs met for the first time, with Barcelona winning 1-0. Since then, Barcelona have been dominant in the fixture, winning three times more games than Espanyol. Such is the lop-sided nature of the fixture that, although fans of Espanyol regard it as their main rivalry, fans of Barcelona are more focused on their club's rivalry with Real Madrid. Espanyol's shirts of blue and white stripes originated in 1910, when the club adopted the colours of Roger de Lluria, the 13th century commander of the Aragonese navy.

The origins of Barcelona's colours of red and blue are unclear, but are believed to have been chosen by the club's founder, Joan Gamper, a former Swiss footballer, whose first club, Excelsior Zurich, played in the same colours.
2. These two clubs come from which Southern European city?

Answer: Lisbon

The "Derby de Lisboa" is one of the major fixtures in Portuguese football, as the participants, Benfica and Sporting CP, are two of the so-called "Big Three" in Portugal. The fixture was first played in 1907, prior to which eight of Benfica's players left the club to join the newly formed Sporting.

The first game saw Benfica win 2-1. In the more than 300 games played between the two since the first meeting, Benfica has a slight edge over Sporting in terms of wins, but neither of them, along with their other great rival FC Porto, has been relegated from the Portuguese top flight. Benfica's red shirts were chosen a year after the club's foundation in 1904, as red was determined to be a colour that stood out better visually. Sporting, although officially founded in 1907, traces its roots back to 1902 - its predecessors originally played in white shirts but, upon the foundation of Sporting, it adopted green in its badge to represent hope for the future.

Originally wearing green and white halved shirts, the club subsequently adopted the green and white hoops of the club's rugby team.
3. These two clubs come from which Southern European city?

Answer: Milan

The Derby di Milano is contested between AC Milan and Internazionale (commonly known as Inter). The two clubs are among Italy's most successful, with only Juventus having won more national titles. The rivalry between the two dates back to the foundation of Inter in 1908, when a disagreement between members of AC Milan over the signing of non-Italian players led to some electing to leave and form their own club.

The first meeting between the two was in January 1909, and saw AC Milan win 3-2. Since then, the two have been evenly matched, with Inter holding a slight advantage in the fixture. AC Milan's stripes were chosen to represent the passion of the players (red) and the fear of their opponents (black); Inter's blue and black stripes were chosen to symbolise the night sky, as the club's official foundation was at 11.30pm, while blue was considered by the club's founder, Giorgio Muggiani, as being the opposite to the red of AC Milan. So associated with their colours are the two clubs, that their nicknames are "I Rossoneri" (the Red and Blacks) and "I Nerazzurri" (the Black and Blues).
4. These two clubs come from which South American city?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

The "Fla-Flu" is the name given to the rivalry between Flamengo and Fluminense, two of the big four clubs in Rio de Janeiro (alongside Botafogo and Vasco de Gama). Although there are major rivalries between each of the four clubs, the Fla-Flu is regarded as one of Brazil's most intense. Dating back to 1911, when a number of Fluminense players unhappy with the running of the club left to form Flamengo's first football team, the fixture was first played in July 1912, and resulted in Fluminense winning 3-2. Since then, the two have played each other more than 400 times in various competitions, with Flamengo holding the advantage in terms of wins. Flamengo's shirts of red and black hoops date from 1916 - the team originally wore the red and black colours of the club's rowing section, but in a quartered pattern, which was then changed as it was regarded as unlucky. Winning their first state championship in 1914 in red, black and white hooped shirts, the white was removed in 1916 as it resembled the flag of Germany. Fluminense's colours were adopted in 1920, and incorporate the maroon and green colours found on the state coat of arms of Rio de Janeiro.
5. These two clubs come from which South American city?

Answer: Montevideo

The "Clásico del fútbol uruguayo" is the name given to the rivalry between Uruguay's two biggest and most popular clubs, Peñarol and Nacional, both based in the capital city, Montevideo. The rivalry dates back to 1900, making it the oldest football derby in the world outside Great Britain. Peñarol's predecessor, Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC), was formed in 1891, while Nacional came about in 1899.

The first meeting between the two was in July 1900, and saw CURCC win 2-0. In 1913, the football section of CURCC was separated from the rest of the club, and formed a new club side that named itself Peñarol. Since their first meeting, the two clubs have met more than 500 times in total, with Peñarol holding the advantage. Nacional started out wearing red shirts, before opting to change to their now traditional white in 1902, with the red retained as their away colours. Peñarol have worn yellow and black since their foundation as CURCC, initially as quartered shirts, before switching to black and yellow stripes in 1911.

These colours symbolise the club's past as part of the railway, as they were the colours of George Stephenson's legendary British railway locomotive, 'Rocket'.
6. These two clubs come from which South American city?

Answer: Santiago

The "Clásico Universitario" is one of Chile's major rivalries, involving two of the "big three" from the capital, Santiago. As the name suggests, the two clubs involved, Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica, trace their history back to sports clubs of the universities with which they share their names. Club Universidad de Chile was formed in 1927 through the merger of two existing clubs by students of the University of Chile, and was the university's official sports club until 1980, while Universidad Católica, again ostensibly the sporting society of the Catholic University of Chile, began its professional football club in 1937.

The first meeting between the two came in July 1937, which saw a 2-1 win for Universidad de Chile, since when they have had the advantage in terms of wins in the more than 200 fixtures played between them. Universidad de Chile have traditionally played in blue since their formation, but in 1959 they switched from blue shirts and white shorts to their now familiar all royal blue kit. Universidad Católica have since their formation played in white shirts with a single blue band across the middle, taken from the colours of the university's coat of arms.
7. These two clubs come from which North African city?

Answer: Casablanca

The derby between Raja Casablanca and their neighbours Wydad is one of Morocco's major fixtures between two of the country's biggest, most popular and most successful clubs. Wydad was originally founded in 1937 while Morocco was still a French protectorate, as a sports club for the local population, with its football section established in June 1939. Raja was founded in 1949 as a club to represent the Moroccan resistance to French rule.

The two first met in 1956, during the first league season following Moroccan independence, with Raja winning 1-0. Since then, the fixture has been played more than 100 times, with Raja having a slight advantage in terms of wins, but more draws than wins for either side having taken place. Raja's primary colour of green (often paired with white) was chosen as representing hope, as well as being a traditional colour of Islam.

In addition, it is the colour of the star on Morocco's flag. Wydad primarily play in red, the colour of the background on Morocco's flag, which represents bravery, and can also represent love, which is a meaning of the Arabic word "wydad".
8. These two clubs come from which Northern European city?

Answer: Copenhagen

The rivalry between Copenhagen's two major clubs, Brøndby and FC Copenhagen, is unusual in that the history of the two clubs as they are only goes back as far as the mid-1960s, with both coming about through mergers. Brøndby was founded in December 1964 through the merger of two local clubs in the area, Brøndbyøster and Brøndbyvester, as a condition of the construction of a new stadium. FC Copenhagen came about as a result of the merger between two of Copenhagen's major clubs, KB and B1903, in an effort to secure the long term future of both.

The first meeting between the two came in FC Copenhagen's first league season in 1992, and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Since then, despite the club being the junior in age, FC Copenhagen have the advantage in wins in the more than 100 fixtures between the two. Brøndby's colours of yellow and blue come from the club's badge, which in turn comes from the coat of arms of the Brøndby Municipality, which consists of a well in gold on a blue background. FC Copenhagen play predominantly in white, which was a shared colour between KB and B1903.
9. These two clubs come from which Northern European city?

Answer: Liverpool

Everton and Liverpool share one of world football's oldest rivalries, with histories dating back to the late 19th century. Everton was founded in 1878, and ten years later became one of the founder members of the Football League. In 1892, following a disagreement over the rent of their stadium, Anfield, the club purchased a parcel of land nearby to build their own stadium.

The landowner, left with an empty stadium, formed his own club which he called Liverpool, which joined the Football League in 1893.

The first meeting between the two was in October 1894, a 3-0 win for Everton. Having since played each other more than 200 times, Liverpool maintains a significant advantage in numbers of wins over Everton. Everton have played in blue shirts and white shorts since 1901, having played in a variety of colours following their formation. Liverpool initially played in blue and white quartered shirts, before switching to red in 1894. Until 1964, the club played with white shorts, until manager Bill Shankly was inspired to have the team in all red, as a means of intimidating the opposition.
10. These two clubs come from which Northern European city?

Answer: Hamburg

The Hamburg derby between Hamburg SV and FC St Pauli is one of Germany's longest running local rivalries. Hamburg was officially formed in 1919 following the merger of three local football clubs that were struggling following the First World War. St Pauli's foundation came in 1910 when a football section was established by the local sports club, with this split into a separate football club in 1924.

The first meeting between the two came in October 1924, which Hamburg won 3-1. Over the course of the rivalry, the two have played each other almost 100 times, with Hamburg having the significant advantage in wins. Hamburg's colours are officially blue, white and black, which were the colours of one of the club's predecessors. But, they play in white shirts and red shorts, which are the colours of the city itself. St Pauli's colours of brown and white originated at the foundation of the club in 1910, when one of the club's players, Amandus Vierth, suggested them; at the time, brown cotton was cheap.
