Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who skated to a program called, "King of Kings" in the 1984 Olympic Games?

Answer: Brian Orser

Brian Orser's free skate for the 1984 Olympics was called "King of Kings". He wore a purple costume and skated it almost flawlessly. He placed second overall to Scott Hamilton, who was ahead after compulsory figures, although Orser won the freeskate. Kurt's first Olympics was in 1988.
2. Who skated to the music, "The Night They Invented Champagne", from "Gigi" in the 1988 Olympic Games?

Answer: Elizabeth Manley

Liz was quite sick during these games but skated a perfect free skate, and actually beat Katarina Witt in this part of the competition. Katarina however, took the gold overall.
3. Which two skaters were billed as the, "Battle of the Carmens", in the 1988 Olympic Games?

Answer: Katarina Witt and Debi Thomas

Katarina and Debi had the two much-touted programs. Witt placed first and Thomas third, while Liz Manley sneaked into the middle and took the silver. Roslyn's Olympics were in 1984, and her rival was Witt.
4. Which of the following skated to "Scheherezade" during the 2001-02 season as one of their programs?

Answer: Michelle Kwan

Only Michelle skated in Worlds. Paul Wylie retired from I.S.U. eligible competition in 1992. Nancy Kerrigan and Oksana Baiul both retired from I.S.U. eligible competition shortly after the 1994 Olympic Games.
5. What Canadian skater was known for his "Pagliacci" program?

Answer: Toller Cranston

This was considered by many to be one of Toller's masterpieces. Shaver was one of Toller's rivals, although Ron was also Canadian. Vern Taylor was best known for doing the first triple axel in competition.
6. Which famous ice dancers skated to Bolero in the 1984 Olympics and virtually rendered that music sacred for the next 18 years?

Answer: Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean

The Torvill and Dean number was a skating classic. No one had the nerve or gall to use the music for years! Mishkutjnok and Dmitriev were pairs skaters, not ice dancers. Wilson and McCall did not skate to Bolero, Anissina and Piezerat did not take part in the 1984 Games.
7. Who skated to "The Man in the Iron Mask" at the Worlds?

Answer: Alexei Yagudin

Sexy Alexei, of course! How could anyone who loves skating forget? Both this and his short, "Winter," were fantastic.
8. Lillehammer, 1994, "Casablanca"?

Answer: Kurt Browning

Why Kurt, of course! This is one of the best-known programs ever skated, a Browning classic!
9. Who did a famous rendition of "The Black Swan" in 1994?

Answer: Oksana Baiul

This was a truly beautiful program, opening with balletic steps on toe-picks. Oksana was the gold medalist, Kerrigan the silver, and Tonya placed eighth after several fiascos.
10. Who did a 2003 program as a tribute to Rudolf Nureyev?

Answer: Evgeny Plushenko

This was Plushenko's freeskate. Dick Button commented that Nureyev might well have rolled over in his grave, but the judges liked it well enough to give Evgeny the gold! Neither Jeff nor Emanuel medaled.
