Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. White gloves have been banned for some time now on WKF-tournaments. What color gloves are allowed?

Answer: Red gloves for "Aka" and blue gloves for "Ao"

Shiro was the name for the competitor wearing the white gloves. The belt and leg protection are also both supposed to be in the right colors.
2. There are two categories of offences in Kumite, aptly named category 1 (C1) and category 2 (C2). Which of the following statements is correct?

Answer: If an offence of C1 has been commited, the Shushin will pause the match correctly and cross his hands in the direction of the offender

You're not allowed to make contact to the joints, these include knees, elbows, hips and shoulders (although the back of the shoulder is an allowed target). "Mubobi" and talking during a fight are both offences of the second category.
3. The main referee is also known as Shushin. What are the judges (with the flags) called?

Answer: Fukushin

They help the referee with flag signals. They also have to help the referee in the making of difficult decisions. A judge will signal when he sees a competitor score, when he sees that a competitor is about to commit an offence or when he's committed one, when he sees if a competitor is hurt or sick, when one or both of the competitors has left the match area, or in any other case when he judges it nessesary for the referee to focus his attention to.
4. What is the correct meaning of the term "Chukoku"?

Answer: A warning for small offences or a first small offence

The penalties are described like this: Chukoku is a warning for small offences or a first small offence. Keikoku is a penalty for committing a second small offence or for more serious offences that aren't serious enough to give a "Hansoku-chui" for, the opponent will receive Ippon (one point). Hansoku-chui is a penalty for committing a third small offence or when the offender has already received a Keikoku. The opponent will receive Nihon (two points).
Hansoku is a disqualification from the tournament. The competitor will be allowed to compete in a following tournament though.
Shikaku is a disqualification from the tounament. This will always lead to a consultmoment with the commission of referees to decide if the competitor may compete in a future tournament. This is very serious and is luckily not given out very often as it is decisive for the future of the competitor. It usualy shows that the competitor has no respect for the prestige and honnor of Karate-do.
5. A kick that is properly placed to the head by "Aka", so it scores, will reward him three points. The referee will pause the match and then speak the following words: "Aka, Jodan Geri, _______".

Answer: Sanbon

One point is Ippon, two points Nihon, and three points Sanbon.
6. A match will begin by the referee saying "Tsuzukete Hajime".

Answer: False

A match will begin by the referee saying "Shobu Hajime". "Tsuzukete Hajime" is said to proceed after the referee has pauzed the match.
7. "Aka No Kachi" means the competitor wearing the red gloves has won the match.

Answer: True

And "Ao No Kachi" means the competitor with the blue gloves has won the match, so the match is over.
8. You have to be well protected to fight. Which of the following statements is true?

Answer: If you get blood on your GI, you have one minute to change into a clean one

Wear dental protection. You want to leave the tournament with all your teeth still in your mouth! Never roll op your sleeves, your opponent's thumb might get caught in the folds or something like that. Contacts are allowed, but this is at your own risk. Just be sure to keep your GI clean.
9. If you're not present in time you will be disqualified. "Shikkaku" and "Hansoku" are not the right terms for this type of disqualification. What is the right term?

Answer: kiken

Funny fact: in flemish (dutch) we sometimes refer to a chicken as "Kieken" (pronounced the same way as "Kiken"), so someone who doesn't appear on the match floor on time is a chicken.
10. The usual color for a karate GI is white.

Answer: True

It may never have blood in it.
