Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the last batting champion in the 20th Century not to hit a home run in the year that he won the title?

Answer: Rod Carew

Rod Carew won the batting crown in 1972 while playing for the Minnesota Twins without hitting a home run. The last National League player to do this was Zack Wheat of Brooklyn in 1912. This shows that this is really an isolated player's season.
2. What 20th Century catcher had the best career fielding percentage?

Answer: Bill Freehan

The greatest career fielding percentage by a catcher was an astounding .993 by Bill Freehan of the Detroit Tigers. His career was played from 1961 to 1973. No other catcher was close.
3. What American League team won their division, posted the worst road record in history for a division winner, won only one post season road game, and still won the World Series?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins did this in 1987 and defeated the St.Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3 in the World Series. Both the Twins in the American LCS against the Tigers, nor the Cardinals in the World Series could manage more than one road game win. The Metrodome was the first indoor park to host a World Series game.
4. Which of the following thieves played only 12 years in the Major Leagues and still ranked 5th in all-time career stolen bases in the 20th Century?

Answer: Vince Coleman

Coleman retired with 752 stolen bases which was only 55 behind the 4th place career leader Tim Raines who had played 21 seasons in the Majors. Vince also had 5 more than 6th place thief Max Carey who had played 20 seasons. He received little respect for his base stealing.
5. Which one of these catchers held the record for playing in 171 consecutive games without committing an error?

Answer: Charles Johnson

Charles Johnson with the Florida Marlins accomplished this on June 23rd, 1996 through the end of the 1997 season. On opening day in 1998 he committed his first error closing the streak. He broke Rick Cerone's record of 159 consecutive errorless games.
6. What 20th Century pitcher holds the record for the highest ERA while winning 20 games in the same season?

Answer: Bobo Newsom

Bobo Newsom went 20-16 for the St.Louis Browns in 1938 for the record ERA of 5.08. Jim Merritt was second in this undesirable stat in 1970 with the Cincinnati Reds with an ERA of 4.08. Lew Burdette of the Milwaukee Braves in 1959 was 21-15 with a 4.07 ERA.
7. Which one of these pitchers was the first to hurl a nine inning no-hitter in each league?

Answer: Tom Hughes

Hughes of the Boston Braves pitched a no-hitter in 1916 against Pittsburgh six years after pitching a no-hit game against the Yankees which he had lost in the 11th inning 5-0 to Cleveland. Jim Bunning was the second pitcher to do this great feat, and the immortal Nolan Ryan was the 3rd and final pitcher in the 20th Century to do this.
8. Which one of these pitchers needed only 12 seasons to compile 300 victories, the fastest in history?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

Mathewson had a total of 312 wins at the close of his 12th season. This was a record that was not touched by any pitcher.
9. Cy Young was the first pitcher to win 100 or more games in both the American and National leagues. When Dennis Martinez emulated this feat he was the _____ ?

Answer: 7th

Marinex was the 7th to have created this amazing feat. The first ever in history was Cy Young (1890-1911), then followed Al Orth (1895-1909), Jim Bunning (1955-1971), Gaylord Perry (1962-1983), Fergie Jenkins (1965-1983), the great Nolan Ryan (1966-1993), and Dennis Martinez (1976-1998).
10. Rod Carew provided his 3000th hit off which American League pitcher?

Answer: Frank Viola

Viola of the Minnesota Twins dished this one up on August 4th, 1985. Rod was the first infielder since Eddie Collins to achieve this milestone. Ironically on this same day, Tom Seaver won his 300th career game by beating the New York Yankess.
