Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following running backs never reached the magical 2000-yard rushing season?

Answer: Jerome Bettis

Bettis' season high was 1665 yards in 1997 with the Steelers. It was his fourth of six Pro Bowl seasons. Jerome played three seasons with the Rams, then 10 in Pittsburgh.
2. All these running backs played at least 10 seasons in the NFL. Which of these never went to a Super Bowl?

Answer: Herschel Walker

Herschel played in 16 seasons with Dallas, Minnesota, Eagles, and the Giants. He retired in 1997. Smith went numerous times with the Cowboys, as did Craig with the 49ers. Thomas also saw four with the Bills.
3. Which of these running backs played the longest in the NFL?

Answer: Lorenzo Neal

Although the life of a running back is relatively short compared to other positions, Neal played in 16 seasons with seven different teams. He spent five seasons with the Chargers, four with the Saints, then one or two-year stints elsewhere. Lorenzo's season high was rushing for 175 yards, but played in only two games that season as a rookie in 1993. Marcus Allen was another running back who beat the system and played for 16 seasons. Both Sanders and Bass played for 10 seasons, and the great Jim Brown played in nine.
4. Which of these running backs retired with the most receptions of any running back in NFL history?

Answer: Larry Centers

Centers played nine of his 14 seasons with the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals, retiring in 2003. Larry's season high was 101 receptions in 1995 for 962 yards. He caught 827 passes in his 198 games. Centers was also a three-time Pro Bowler.
5. Which butter-fingered running back set a season record for coughing up the football 16 times in a season?

Answer: Joe Cribbs

The others never coughed it up more than 10 times in a season. Cribbs' career spanned only eight seasons, and mostly with the Bills. In 1980, he played in 16 games, and ended the season with 16 fumbles. Joe still rushed for 1185 yards in the season, helping the Bills to an AFC East Division crown. In his career, Cribbs fumbled 51 times in 102 games.
6. Which of the following running backs won the most season rushing titles?

Answer: Jim Brown

While the others racked up four rushing titles, the great Cleveland Brown Jim Brown stood on top of the heap with eight in his nine seasons. The only season that Mr. Brown missed out was in 1962, when Jim Taylor took the title with 1474 yards for the Packers. Due to injuries, Brown rushed for 996 yards in that season.
7. Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith retired in 2004 with a career rushing touchdown record of 164. Whose career record did Smith break?

Answer: Marcus Allen

Allen spent 11 seasons with the Raiders and five with the Chiefs. Six seasons in his career, Marcus had more than 10 rushing touchdowns. He retired with 123 in 1997. Emmitt's season high was 25 in 1995 with the Cowboys. 11 of his 164 rushing touchdowns were with the Arizona Cardinals, where he retired. The other greats didn't reach the 100-mark.
8. Which workhorse running back was the first in NFL history to carry the ball 400 times in a season?

Answer: James Wilder

The others didn't make 300 carries in a season. Wilder earned his money in 1984 with Bucs. He carried it 407 times for 1544 yards. 1984 was James' only Pro Bowl season.
9. Who was the first running back in pro football history to average over 100 rushing yards per game for an entire season?

Answer: Spec Sanders

Sanders was a New York Yankee of the AAFC in 1947, and averaged 102.3 yards per game. Brown smashed that record by averaging 133.1 yards per game in 1963 with the Browns. O.J. Simpson then broke Brown's record in 1973 with the Bills, averaging 143.1 yards. Payton's season high was 132.3 in 1977 with the Bears.
10. Which of these running backs retired with more than 20 postseason touchdowns, combined from both the air and the ground?

Answer: Thurman Thomas

Thomas played 12 of his 13 seasons with the Bills. His postseasons included four Super Bowl appearances with the Bills, but all resulted in losses. Thurman retired as a Miami Dolphin in 2000. Earnest Byner scored eight postseason touchdowns in his career, Garrison had two, and Simpson had only one while never going to a Super Bowl.
