3. Which former Rangers captain was nicknamed "Captain Cutlass"?

Answer: Bobby Shearer

This nickname was used because of the way he battled to win games for the club. He made 407 appearances for Rangers and won 4 caps for Scotland. Shearer played for Rangers between 1955 and 1965. He was the captain of Rangers in 1963 when they won the treble.
4. Who was the captain when Rangers won their first major European trophy?

Answer: John Greig

John Greig was the captain when Rangers won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1972. He had been the captain from the late 1960s until the mid-1970s. He had the honour of lifting the first European trophy that Rangers had won, but had to do it in a small room inside the Nou Camp, due to a pitch invasion from the Rangers fans.
5. How many league titles did Terry Butcher win as captain?

Answer: 3

Terry Butcher was the Rangers captain for four years, between 1985 and 1989. He also won the Scottish League Cup in 1987 and 1988. Despite winning these titles, Butcher was not considered a great captain by certain individuals.
6. In 1931, the Celtic goalkeeper, John Thomson, was tragically killed during a match against Rangers. Who was the Rangers captain for the game?

Answer: Davie Meiklejohn

He had the honour of captaining Rangers in an Old Firm game, although this honour was marred due to the death of Thomson. Thomson ran out of his goal to collect the ball, and his head was hit by Rangers forward Sam English's knee. Meiklejohn is credited for quieting the crowd, as he was one of the few people in the ground who realised the seriousness of the injury.

The match finished 0-0.
7. Tommy Muirhead captained Rangers for a short time. How many league goals did he score for Rangers?

Answer: 62

He scored these in 279 league appearances. Muirhead was at Rangers for two separate spells, the first being 7 years long and the second being 5 years long. During his 12 years at the club, Muirhead won 8 league titles. Rangers signed him from Hibernian for only 20 pounds.

His first spell was between 1917 and 1924, and his second spell was between 1925 and 1930. He served as captain halfway through his first spell.
8. In 1961, Rangers reached the final of the first ever Cup Winners' Cup. Who was the captain for all the matches leading up to, and including the final?

Answer: Eric Caldow

Rangers overcame Ferencvaros, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but lost to Fiorentina in the final. In the 1960-61 season, Caldow missed only one game.
9. When Dick Advocaat became the Rangers manager, who did he appoint as his first Rangers captain?

Answer: Lorenzo Amoruso

Some people were surprised by this choice as Advocaat brought Arthur Newman to Rangers, and Newman had previously been the captain of PSV Eindhoven, where Dick Advocaat was the manager. Amoruso was eventually stripped of the captaincy after falling out with the manager. Amoruso was the captain from 1998 until 2000.
10. Who was the captain of Rangers for the final of the 2008 UEFA Cup?

Answer: Barry Ferguson

Unfortunately for Ferguson and Rangers, Zenit Saint Petersburg won the match 2-0. Ferguson was first appointed captain in 2002, and was the youngest Rangers captain ever when he was appointed. Ferguson was stripped of the captaincy by Paul Le Guen, but regained it after missing only one match, as Le Guen was sacked.

He left Rangers in 2009 to go to Birmingham City. His last match as captain was in early 2009.
