Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mexican Clausura 2013 final was played between America and Cruz Azul. In which stadium was the second leg played?

Answer: Azteca Stadium

In Mexico, all playoff games are played in two legs, one being played in each team's stadium. As per the rules, the second leg is always played at the field of the team that did better in the standings throughout the tournament.

The Azteca Stadium, home of America, has hosted several international games, concerts and other events. The Azul Stadium is home of Cruz Azul, where the first leg was played. Both stadiums are located in Mexico City. Omnilife Stadium is home of Guadalajara, and Corregidora Stadium is where Queretaro plays. Queretaro was relegated to Ascenso MX, the Mexican Second Division, at the end of the 2013 regular season.
2. The first leg of the Mexican Clausura 2013 final took place on May 23, and the second took place on May 26. In Mexico, the system works like this (two legs played), but in which of the following countries is the tournament twice as long and the champion is whoever ends up with most points?

Answer: Spain

After Cruz Azul eliminated Santos and America eliminated Monterrey in the semifinals, these two faced off in the Azul Stadium on May 23. The second leg took place in the Azteca Stadium on May 26. Usually, the first leg is always on Thursday and the second leg on Sunday, at least that is the case in Mexico as has been for years.

Countries like Spain have a different system, the tournament is twice as long and whoever ends up with most points wins the championship. In the case of the FIFA World Cup, to use another example, there is a similar system, but games are only played once, there is no second leg. Most Latin American countries follow the same system as Mexico.
3. Not everyone can be a referee in Mexico. There are a set of requirements to be met, which are outlined by the FMF (Mexican Football Federation in English). Which qualified official refereed the second leg of the Mexican Clausura 2013 final?

Answer: Paul Delgadillo

Among the 8 requirements that need to be met in order to be recognized as a referee are to have a good physical condition, and not be currently working as press, or hold any kind of job in a professional soccer team.

Paul Delgadillo made his debut in 2000. His job in the final was greatly criticized because of the decisions he made and the number of cards he showed. Cesar Ramos was the fourth official of the game. Ramos was complimented by America's coach Miguel Herrera days before the game. Marco Antonio Rodriguez was not available as he would be preparing for the 2013 Brazil Confederations Cup and Armando Archundia, for many one of the best Mexican referees, announced his retirement in 2010.
4. The Mexican Clausura 2013 final was incredibly exciting from the start. Which player was shown the red card and thrown out of the game just 14 minutes after the match started?

Answer: Jesus Molina

Jesus Molina, from America, was thrown out after 14 minutes with a straight red card. When I first saw it on TV, I thought it was a red card too because it was an obvious goalscoring opportunity in my opinion. (According to FIFA rule #12, this does deserve a send-off.) However, after the game many disagreed with the referee because there was one more player before Molina, so it wasn't an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

This and other actions led many to say the referee's job was not a good one and that he shouldn't been given the final game.

The referee of the first leg of the final was Jorge Antonio Perez.
5. 20 minutes after the Mexican Clausura 2013 match started, fans of Cruz Azul exploded - a goal had been scored! Which player scored the first goal of the game?

Answer: Teofilo Gutierrez

As the first leg ended 1-0 in favor of Cruz Azul, this goal meant a two-goal advantage for Cruz Azul. Christian Gimenez scored the only goal in the first leg. Mariano Pavone was the third best scorer of the league, with 12 goals in total. Cruz Azul, in fact, was the team with most scored goals in the season, with 46, followed by America, with 39. America ended as the second best team (with most points) of the regular season, and Cruz Azul finished in sixth place.
6. With two minutes remaining, it looked as though the Mexican Clausura 2013 final game was over, but not just yet. The Colombian defender and team captain of America sent the ball to the net with his head at minute 88'. Who is this man?

Answer: Aquivaldo Mosquera

Aquivaldo Mosquera, born in Colombia in 1981 and naturalized to Mexican in 2012, scored a spectacular goal in minute 88, just two minutes before the end of the game. This gave hope to America. It was ironic because Mosquera failed to score a penalty kick at the Cup semifinals against Cruz Azul, greatly affecting the team's chance to classify to the final.

In this match, he did the exact opposite.
7. The Mexican Clausura 2013 final got even more exciting as Moises Muņoz scored the second goal of the game for America in aggregate, seconds before the game was over. Which position was Muņoz playing?

Answer: Goalkeeper

Imagine that! The goalkeeper of the opposite team scores a goal 7 seconds before the game is over! Can you imagine the agony suffered by Cruz Azul and the euphoria and adrenaline displayed by America fans? The Azteca Stadium exploded; people who were leaving the stadium returned to see what was going on. With a tied aggregate score (2-2), the game had no option but to go to 30 more minutes of extra time.

Moises Muņoz, his great job he made as a goalkeeper aside, turned into a hero because of his heroic goal. Many said it was actually an own goal by Alejandro Castro, but the referee gave credit to Muņoz. Muņoz suffered a terrible car accident some months prior to the final, so you can imagine the joy of scoring an important goal after a hard recovery.
8. After 30 minutes of extra time were played, there was still no champion, so the game had to be decided by penalty shootout. Javier Orozco from Cruz Azul kicked the first penalty and missed, followed by America's Raul Jimenez, who scored. Unfortunately for Cruz Azul, it was a rainy night, which made the field slippery. Which player tripped while shooting the penalty and therefore missed?

Answer: Alejandro Castro

Just as Castro approached the ball, he tripped and missed. He and Orozco would be the only players to fail to score in the shootout. Chavez and Flores were both able to score the other penalty kicks for Cruz Azul.
9. Finally, America could win the championship if this player scored. Jimenez, Benitez and Martinez had all scored their penalties, so this was the decisive kick. Who was the shooter?

Answer: Miguel Layun

Miguel Layun is a Mexican player who played for Veracruz before he was transferred to Italian club Atalanta, where he became the first Mexican player to play in the Italian league. Then, he returned to Mexico to play with America. He was highly criticized by many, including fans, throughout the tournament, and he became the one who scored the winning goal. Immediately after he shot and made sure the ball was in the net, Layun euphorically celebrated with the rest of his teammates and his coach, who was even more excited!
10. America ended up as champions, keeping Cruz Azul from breaking their long streak without a league trophy. Which team did Cruz Azul defeat on 1997 to win a title?

Answer: Leon

The Invierno 1997 tournament saw Cruz Azul win a title. In 2013, their number of years without a league win increased to 15. Barcelona plays in the Spanish League.
