Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Goalkeeper Ed de Goey hailed from which country?

Answer: The Netherlands

Signed from Feyenoord in 1997, de Goey made 123 appearances for The Blues before moving to Stoke City in 2003. He was in the teams that won the 1998 English League Cup, the 1998 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 2000 English FA Cup.
2. Aside from a brief loan spell with Tenerife at the age of 19, right back Albert Ferrer played for only one other club besides Chelsea. Which club?

Answer: Barcelona

Ferrer came through the youth system at Barcelona, for whom he would go on to play over 200 games between 1990-1998 before moving to Chelsea. A combination of injuries and fewer games due to squad rotation saw Ferrer retire from playing in 2003 at the relatively young age of 33.
3. For which Major League Soccer team did left back Celestine Babayaro sign in 2008? He later left without having played any competitive matches.

Answer: Los Angeles Galaxy

Babayaro moved to Chelsea from Belgian side Anderlecht in 1997. After dropping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge he moved to Newcastle United in 2005.

In 2008 he signed for LA Galaxy where he was reunited with manager Ruud Gullit who had brought him to Chelsea. Babayaro left LA Galaxy a short time later having played only 45 minutes in a pre-season friendly against FC Seoul. Although not officially stated at the time, it is widely regarded that the reason Babayaro left was because of a falling out between Babayaro and the club hierarchy at Galaxy. The club were disappointed with Babayaro's attitude and apparent lack of motivation, while Babayaro himself was disheartened with the facilities at the club.
4. Centre back Frank Leboeuf moved into which unlikely profession after retiring from playing soccer?

Answer: Acting

Leboeuf joined Chelsea from Strasbourg in 1996 and went on to win several trophies with the club, including the English FA Cup in 1997 & 2000, the 1998 English League Cup and the 1998 European Cup Winners' Cup. Leboeuf was also part of the France squad which won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. Leboeuf left Chelsea in 2001 to join his hometown club Marseille.

After retiring from playing soccer he took up film and stage acting, which he described as his "first passion". His roles included a doctor in "The Theory Of Everything" and a French Resistance fighter in "Allies".
5. As well as Chelsea, Romanian Dan Petrescu played for three other English clubs during his career. For which of the following did he not play?

Answer: Coventry City

Petrescu moved from Italian side Genoa to Sheffield Wednesday in 1994 before moving to Chelsea the following season. After five years and over 150 games he moved to Bradford City in 2000 before joining Southampton the following season. Petrescu again spent only one season before moving on, this time to his home town of Bucharest with National Bucharest, where he spent only one more year before retiring. Petrescu won 95 caps for Romania between 1989 and 2000, and as well as being a part of Chelsea's 1998 European Cup Winner's Cup winning side he also played in the 1989 European Cup Final for Steaua Bucharest. Unfortunately Steaua finished as runners-up that year, losing the final 4-0 to AC Milan. On the scoresheet that day was Ruud Gullit who would go on to manage Petrescu briefly during his time at Chelsea.
6. Didier Deschamps has helped several clubs reach the UEFA Champions League final during his career. Which of the following did he lead there as a manager?

Answer: AS Monaco

During an illustrious playing career, Deschamps won the UEFA Champions Leage in 1993 with Marseille and again in 1996 with Juventus. He also finished as a runner-up with Juventus in 1997 and 1998 and again with Valencia in 2001. During his one season with Chelsea in 1999-2000 he could only help them to the Champions League quarter-final before they were eliminated by Barcelona. He did however win the 2000 FA Cup with Chelsea. Deschamps also won the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000 with France.

As a manager, Deschamps led unfancied AS Monaco to the UEFA Champions League final in 2004 where they were beaten 3-0 by FC Porto. Monaco reached the final by beating Chelsea in the Semi-Final stage. He would go on to manage Juventus and Marseille before leading France to the European Championship Final in 2016 where they were favourites for the tournament, playing on home soil. Unfortunately, they lost 1-0 to Portugal after extra time.
7. Midfielder Gus Poyet's father, Washington, was also an accomplished sportsman. In which sport did he represent Uruguay in the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics?

Answer: Basketball

Gus Poyet won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1995 with Real Zaragoza, who beat Arsenal 2-1 in the final. After a four year spell with Chelsea, Poyet would go on to join Arsenal's bitter North London rivals Tottenham in 2001. Poyet also won the Copa America in 1995 with Uruguay.

During his managerial career Poyet introduced basketball to training sessions at Sunderland, who he managed from 2013-2015. He believed basketball to have many similarities with soccer, particularly marking.

Poyet's son, Diego, also went on to play professional soccer. Despite being born in Zaragoza he went on to represent England at schoolboy level before switching to Uruguay at Under-20 level.
8. After how many seconds did midfielder Roberto Di Matteo score in the 1997 FA Cup Final?

Answer: 42 seconds

Di Matteo joined Chelsea from Lazio in 1996. In the 1997 FA Cup Final he scored after only 42 seconds against Middlesbrough. It was, at the time, the fastest goal to be scored in an FA Cup final at Wembley. Chelsea went on to win the match 2-0. Di Matteo also won the FA Cup in 2000 with Chelsea, as well as the 1998 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the 1998 UEFA Super Cup. He suffered a leg break in 2001, which eventually forced him to retire from playing eighteen months later at the age of only 31.

Di Matteo would go on to manage Chelsea, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, both in 2012. This was the first time in their history Chelsea had won the Champions League. Despite this, poor form the following season saw Di Matteo fired in November 2012.
9. Striker Tore Andre Flo left Chelsea for which Scottish club?

Answer: Rangers

Norwegian Flo joined Chelsea from SK Brann in 1997 and scored some memorable goals for The Blues, including a brace against Barcelona in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final in the 1999-2000 season. Chelsea won the match 3-1 but despite Flo scoring in the second leg Barcelona went on to win the tie 6-4 on aggregate.

The introduction of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen saw Flo drop down the pecking order at Chelsea and in November 2000 he signed for Scottish side Rangers for a then record transfer sum paid for a Norwegian player.

It was also a then Scottish record fee also. Flo failed to live up to expectations however, and despite scoring 29 goals in 53 appearances he was sold to Sunderland in 2002.
10. Manager Gianluca Vialli took over at Chelsea in 1998, replacing which Dutchman?

Answer: Ruud Gullit

Gullit managed Chelsea from 1996-1998. During his spell he won the FA Cup in 1997. A falling out with the Chelsea board saw him replaced with Vialli following the first leg of the English League Cup Semi-Final against Arsenal in 1998. Vialli would go on to win the competition and also won the 1998 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He also won the UEFA Super Cup in 1998 as well as the 2000 FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield in the 2000-2001 season.

With five trophies in under three years, Vialli was, at the time, the most successful manager in Chelsea's history in terms of silverware. Despite this, he was sacked just five games into the 2000-2001 season following a poor run of form and a dispute with several Chelsea players.
