Answer: 1982, Spain

In the first tournament where shoot-outs were introduced they also were needed. The first shoot-out was between West Germany and France. West Germany won the shoot-out 5-4. Uli Stielike failed for West Germany, and Didier Six and Maxime Bossis failed for France.
2. These teams have participated more than once, and won all their shoot-outs in the World Cup. Which teams?

Answer: Argentina, West Germany

Both West Germany and Argentina had been in shoot-outs three times and not lost. West Germany won 1982 against France, 1986 against Mexico and 1990 against England. Argentina won 1990 against Yugoslavia and Italy and 1998 against England. Brazil has also been three times in shoot-outs but lost once, to France in 1986. Ireland has won 1990 against Romania and lost 2002 against Spain. Once in shoot-outs and unbeaten: Belgium (1986 against Spain), Bulgaria (1994 against Mexico), Sweden (1994 against Romania) and South-Korea (2002 against Spain).

Italy was in the shoot-out in 1990 semi-final against Argentina, 1994 final against Brazil and 1998 quarter-final against France. Mexico and England have been in shoot-out twice and not yet won, Netherlands have been in shoot-outs only once. Also Romania has been in shoot-out twice and not yet won. Italy had 15 penalty shoot out tries in those 3 matches, and scored only 8!

In Spain 1982 there was one, 1986 had three, 1990 had four, 1994 had three, 1998 had three, and 2002 saw two penalty shoot-outs.

1986 Mexico v West Germany (1-4), 1990 Italy v Argentina (3-4), 1998 Italy v France v (3-4), and 2002 South-Korea v Spain (5-3). Only Spain in 1982 and USA in 1994 didn't need shoot-outs in any of their games.
6. Which of these teams were in more than one shoot-out at the same World Cup?

Answer: Argentina, Spain

Argentina was in two shoot-outs in 1990, against Yugoslavia and Italy, and won both. Spain was in two shoot-outs in 2002 against Ireland (won) and South Korea (lost).

Answer: Mexico

Mexico was in shoot-outs in 1986 against West Germany, and 1994 against Bulgaria. Obviously they lost both of them. Mexico has had 7 tries and scored 2.
8. Who of these famous footballers has NOT failed with his shot in a shoot-out?

Answer: Zico

Zico missed a penalty in normal time against France in quarter-final in 1986, but scored in the shoot-out in the same match. Maradona and Stojkovic missed in the same quarter-final match in 1990. Maradona then scored a penalty in shoot-out in the next match against Italy. In that same semi-final match, Roberto Donadoni with Aldo Serena missed their penalties and Argentina went to final.
9. Which of these eams did not miss a penalty in any shoot-out from 1982 to 2002?

Answer: South Korea and Belgium

In 1986 Belgium scored all their five penalties against Spain, and 2002 South-Korea beat Spain by scoring from all five penalties. Only one man for West Germany and Sweden have failed. Three Argentinians have failed their penalties, but still won all their shoot-outs.
10. Who was the first player to shoot penalties in shoot-outs in three different tournaments?

Answer: Roberto Baggio

Roberto Baggio scored a penalty in 1990 against Argentina, missed in 1994 against Brazil in the final, and scored in 1998 against France.
