Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The seventh race of the year was held at Monte Carlo on May 26th, 2002. Who was the fastest in Saturday's qualifying?

Answer: J.P. Montoya

Montoya had seven pole positions in 2002. He had a scorching lap time of 1:16:676 s. The track was suited for the Michelin tires and without doubt, the top winners were all from Michelin tires (Michael came 3rd in qualifying and second in race).
2. As usual, Monte Carlo is known for accidents. The narrow curves and fast chicanes are notorious, and is considered a true test of a driver's skill. How many drivers retired due to accidents?

Answer: 9

Prominent entries in this list included J.P. Montoya (though it could be more appropriate to say a blown engine was the root cause in his case), Button, Panis, Salo, Raikkonen etc. Ten drivers were not classified as finishers - Villeneuve had a mechanical failure!
3. By the time the Monaco Grand Prix was held, many of the mid-section teams had announced major cost-cutting schemes. Which of the following teams had announced similar measures at Monaco? (Clue: the team expected to get a pay-check for finishing in the top ten in 2001, but was 'denied' the same for 'technical' reasons)

Answer: Minardi

BAR and Jordan had announced their cost-cutting schemes well before Monte Carlo. Paul Stoddart of Minardi expected a big payday for finishing in the top ten in 2001. They thought so because Prost was defunct and so the next team (Minardi was 11th) should be given the pay check for that. However the FIA disagreed with this.
4. At the end of Monte Carlo Grand Prix race, one driver had retired in all the seven races that were held up to that point in 2002, which was a sort of a record. Who was this driver?

Answer: Olivier Panis

Olivier Panis drove for BAR Honda and had, at best, a miserable season. Though in the end, he had one fifth, and one sixth place to show for his efforts! In the first seven races, he retired due to a wide variety of reasons like accidents, throttle failure, gearbox problems etc.
5. Who won the Monte Carlo Grand Prix of 2002?

Answer: David Coulthard

DC was severely tested by Michael in the latter stages of the race, however he managed to hold on to record his first win of the season. Total Laps were 78 ( 3.347 Kilometres), for a total race distance of 261.081 kilometres. Fastest lap was by Rubens Barrichello who finished 7th in the race.
6. The eighth race of the season was held, at "Circuit Gilles Villeneuve" in Montreal, Canada, on June 9th, 2002. Who was fastest in Saturday's qualifying?

Answer: J.P. Montoya

This was the second consecutive pole position for Montoya, and his fastest lap was under the 1 minute 13 second barrier.
7. If Ferrari won the Canadian Grand Prix race, they would have been celebrating their ________ Grand Prix win in F1.

Answer: 150

Michael Schumacher won the race for them, and with it he completed 59 Grand Prix wins. Rubens was third.
8. There were only seven drivers (quite a lot) who were in the same lap as the winner at the Canadian Grand Prix. Who was NOT one of them?

Answer: Nick Heidfeld

Fisichella finished 5th and Trulli 6th in the race. Ralf was seventh. Nick Heidfeld finished 12th, one lap behind.
9. Before the Canadian Grand Prix race, which team introduced a new "aero kit" for its cars?

Answer: BAR Honda

The results weren't so good as Olivier Panis was 8th (his first finish of the season), and Villeneuve was the first to retire with an engine problem.
10. Who won the Canadian Grand Prix of 2002?

Answer: Michael Schumacher

The usual story... Total laps were 70 (4.395 Kilometres) for a total race distance of 303.512 Kilometres. Fastest Lap was by Montoya (he, however, didn't finish the race due to a blown engine!).
