Shelley Long decided after five years to leave the show. Shelley Long said on "The Phil Donahue Show" that she left to devote more time to her family and to work on movies. However, it was also rumored by even other cast members that she simply didn't get along with the other cast members.

Sloan came to tell Diane some news that he had. Diane was not particularly thrilled to see him, but was happy about the news.
