Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bird's home loses its tail and mixes with place to grow crops, to find sitcom with Jerry and friends. (1990)

Answer: Seinfeld

Bird's home = nest. Loses its tails means to drop the last letter, leaving 'nes'.
Place to grow crops = field.
Mix (anagram) nesfield to arrive at 'Seinfeld'.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld played himself in this series set in New York, which ran until 1998. Plots usually revolved around the often silly situations he and his friends found themselves in. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards and Jason Alexander appeared as Elaine, Kramer and George respectively.
2. Hospital show took in Chico and Chica. Go, hop el and visit them. (1994)

Answer: Chicago Hope

The words 'took in' indicate a hidden word clue: '...and (CHICA GO HOP E)l and...' The el is the elevated railway in Chicago, which is sometimes seen in the series.

'Chicago Hope' was also the name of the hospital in this series, which ran until 2000. As well as being concerned with the running of the hospital and the patients who arrived each week, plotlines explored the personal lives and relationships of staff members. Amongst the stars were Mandy Patinkin, Christine Lahti and Adam Arkin.
3. Brothers rise far, mingle and get a sitcom named for one of them. (1993)

Answer: Frasier

'Mingle' indicates an anagram of 'rise far', giving us 'Frasier'.

'Frasier' gave the 'Cheers' character Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) his own show, in which Frasier returned from Boston to Seattle and got his own call-in radio programme from which to dispense his psychiatric advice. David Hyde Pierce played his psychiatrist brother Niles, and John Mahoney played their retired cop father. The show ended in 2004.
4. Sam's favourite breakfast cereal loses a moon of Jupiter and gives him his series. (1982)

Answer: Cheers

Former baseball player, Sam 'Mayday' Malone, might well have favoured Cheerios for his morning meal.
Io is a moon of Jupiter.
Cheerios - Io = 'Cheers'.

Ted Danson played Sam Malone from 1982 to 1993, the entire run of the series that revolved around the lives of the staff and customers of Sam's bar in Boston. Shelley Long and Kirstie Alley split the duty as the female interest and Rhea Perlman was a gem as Carla, the waitress.
5. Scottish mountain and engineer Jones combine to produce medical show. (1961)

Answer: Ben Casey

Scottish mountain = Ben
Engineer Jones = Casey
Combine them for 'Ben Casey'.

Vince Edwards starred as 'Ben Casey', a doctor who did not always do things 'by the book', from 1961 until 1966, when the show ended. Sam Jaffe played his fuzzy-haired mentor Dr. Zorba.
6. Defenders lose deer, gather in smallest U.S. state, initially, and produce popular series. (1994)

Answer: Friends

Defenders - deer = (De)fend(er)s = Fends
Smallest U.S. state = Rhode Island, initially = R.I.
When 'Fends' gathers in 'R.I.' we get 'F(ri)ends'.

As the title implies, the plotlines of 'Friends' involved the lives and relationships of a group of six friends living in New York City. The stars included Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry, and the show aired its final episode in 2004.
7. Don't give Pa a placebo, Nan. Zap those germs inside him so he can help his sons run the ranch. (1959)

Answer: Bonanza

The word 'inside' indicates a hidden word clue: 'place(BO NAN ZA)p those...'

Canadian actor Lorne Greene played Ben (a.k.a. Pa) Cartwright, and his sons were initially played by Pernell Roberts (Adam), Dan Blocker (Hoss) and Michael Landon (Little Joe) in the popular western series that ran until 1973. Besides running the Ponderosa, the Cartwrights also found time to right wrongs and help people in trouble. In some places, reruns of 'Bonanza' were shown under the title 'Ponderosa'.
8. Comedy sounds like Richie and his friends were in a blissful state of confusion. (1974)

Answer: Happy Days

A blissful state of confusion could be a 'happy daze', which sounds like 'Happy Days'.

Ron Howard played Richie Cunningham in this tale of family life and growing up in the 1950s. Henry Winkler as 'the Fonz' provided a more 'cool' greaser counterpoint to the clean-cut Richie and his buddies. 'Happy Days' ran until 1984.
9. Sign-carrying striker duels with a sword for series set in Wisconsin. (1992)

Answer: Picket Fences

Sign-carrying striker = picket
Duels with a sword = fences

'Picket Fences' was a David E. Kelley creation that ran from 1992 until 1996. The inhabitants of the small town of Rome, Wisconsin dealt with a variety of situations including murders and kidnapping. Tom Skerritt played the sheriff and Ray Walston was the judge.
10. Royal Artillery initially embraces brick carrier for spinoff about Mary's friend. (1974)

Answer: Rhoda

Royal Artillery initially = RA
Brick carrier = hod
RA embracing hod gives us 'R(hod)a'.

Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper) left Minneapolis, where she'd been Mary's friend in 'Mary Tyler Moore' and returned to her birthplace in New York City. 'Rhoda' ran until 1978, and during that time we met Joe (David Groh), to whom she was married for part of the time, sister Brenda (Julie Kavner) and the disembodied voice of Carlton the Doorman (Lorenzo Music).
