Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Al Swearengen regained consciousness from his illness, which of the following was not at his bedside?

Answer: Trixie

A blood pool in Al's right eye and a partial paralysis of his right arm lead the doctor to believe that Al had a small stroke as a result of his kidney stone problem. Swearengen threatened to slit the Doc's throat if word of his incapacity got out.
2. Why did Commissioner Jarry meet with A. W. Merrick?

Answer: To print a legal notice

The notice was full of legalese, and intended solely to scare miners into selling their claims for a fraction of their worth. Merrick, an educated man, immediately realized that the inflammatory statement actually meant nothing. Despite Jarry's demand that the notice be placed on the front page, Merrick printed and posted the statement separate from his newspaper.
3. Why did the very ladylike Alma Garrett seek out the prostitute Trixie?

Answer: She wanted an abortion

Alma went to Trixie for information about an abortion as she feared Doc Cochran had harshly judged her because of her past drug addiction. Trixie immediately told the doctor about Alma's condition, but insisted that he indirectly approach Alma about her pregnancy.
4. What was the name of the newly formed county in which Deadwood is located?

Answer: Lawrence

County Commissioner Jarry is as crooked as any Deadwood resident, and intent on creating a panic in the mining camp by circulating false rumors that all existing mining claims will be questioned. Financed by Francis Wolcott's principal, Cy Tolliver has begun to buy up claims of frightened prospectors.
5. Many of the Bella Union's prostitutes defected to the new brothel run by Joanie and Maddie. One remains loyal to Cy Tolliver, and regularly reports to him on the activities at the Chez Ami. What is her name?

Answer: Doris

Doris informed Cy that Francis Wolcott was abusive towards her, and had thrown her against a wall. Wolcott had entered the brothel and ordered all of the women to face the wall and not look at him. Doris peeked and an enraged Wolcott reacted violently. Tolliver savored this information as he pondered the best way to use it to his future advantage.
6. After being fired as Sofia's tutor, the prim and proper Miss Isringhausen went to Silas Adams for help. Silas allowed her to stay in his hotel room while he slept elsewhere. When he returned in the morning to get fresh clothes, how did Miss Isringhausen repay him?

Answer: Sex

Notwithstanding Alma Garrett comparison of Miss Isringhausen's moral code with that of the Puritan preacher Cotton Mather, the former nanny aggressively seduced Mr. Adams. Silas later expressed a thanks that he did not meet the enigmatic young woman at a poker table.
7. Calamity Jane befriended an African-American man and shared a bottle of whiskey with him. He wore the insignia of a U.S. Cavalry soldier. What was his rank?

Answer: General

Calling himself the "Nigger General", Samuel Fields arrived in Deadwood seventeen weeks late in returning a rented horse to the livery stable. Bullock later had to save him from being tarred by an angry mob.
8. After reading a legal notice questioning their mining claims, an angry mob formed and attacked Commissioner Jarry. Sheriff Seth Bullock intervened and led the crooked politician to safety. Where does Seth put the Commissioner?

Answer: Charlie Utter's storeroom

The secured and barred storage area at Utter's freight business worked well for a makeshift jail, as Jarry was taken into protective custody. A drunken Calamity Jane acted as a temporary jailer.
9. What was the name of Wild Bill Hickock's widow?

Answer: Agnes

Francis Wilcott allowed himself to be swindled by E. B. Farnum by purchasing Hickock's last letter which was falsely represented to contain the location of a secret mine. Wilcott read the letter addressed to Agnes to his favorite prostitute, Carrie.
10. Sheriff Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen are forced by developing political circumstances to forge an uneasy alliance. This does not stop Al from threatening to knock out the lawman if Seth did what?

Answer: Wipes a bottle rim

Apparently the sharing of saliva is a sign of trust. Spitting on one's palm before a handshake and drinking whiskey out of the same bottle signify an honor-binding agreement.
