Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said, "My instincts are to cure"?

Answer: Hawkeye

Hawkeye said it in "Blood Brothers" when he finds out one of his patients has Leukemia. There was chemotherapy at the time, but it wasn't a cure.
2. Why did Margaret make the flu shot painful for Hawkeye?

Answer: She didn't like the fact that he laughed when Radar came in on them.

The shot scene came from "Carry on Hawkeye" when he was the only staff surgeon not sick. The flu shot was experimental at the time. He claimed later the shot gave him the flu.
3. What was the message written to Hawkeye from BJ written in stone that Hawkeye could only see from the helicopter?

Answer: Goodbye

It was insinuated throughout the episode that BJ couldn't say goodbye. The episode was the final episode entitled "Goodbye Farewell and Amen".
4. What famous psychiatrist did Freedman write to?

Answer: Sigmund Freud

The episode "Dear Sigmund" shows how difficult it is to be a psychiatrist both in and out of a war. Freedman tells Hawkeye and BJ that the patient he had been working with, who heard voices that said to kill himself, listened to the voices, and he didn't see it coming.
5. Who is the only character that shows up in every episode?

Answer: Hawkeye

Hawkeye was the only character in the episode "Hawkeye". Second place was Hot Lips. Other characters left the show or were minor.
6. Why was blowing up a glove painful in the episode "Hawkeye"?

Answer: he had a concussion

The glove balloon was a present to the kids. It was also done in other episodes. He said he was afraid to sleep because he might never wake up, so he talked in English to a strictly Korean speaking family until Radar showed up (who never made an appearance, he just honked the horn).
7. What is the name of the song that Radar sang to a kid in "The Kids"?

Answer: Bye Low Baby

It is one of my favorite songs sung in the show. Radar sang the song to a young female orphan that he put into his bed to sleep without being changed again. She didn't fall asleep right away, so he sang to her.
8. Who wrote "M*A*S*H" the novel that the television series was based on?

Answer: Richard Hooker

Richard Hooker wrote the sequels to "M*A*S*H" as well. Klinger wasn't a character in the book. Joseph Heller wrote "Catch 22". Erich Maria Remarque wrote "All Quiet on the Western Front". Ernest Hemingway wrote "A Farewell to Arms". All the answers are war novelists.
9. Why does Frank Burns leave the M*A*S*H unit in the television series, the movie, the play, and the original novel?

Answer: for psychiatric reasons

Only the book series and the movie had Hawkeye make Frank punch Hawkeye which led to him leaving leaving wearing a straight jacket. My favorite line from the movie was when Duke said: "Now, fair's fair Henry. If I nail Hotlips and punch Hawkeye, can I go home too?" Frank stayed in the TV series the longest, but he always left the series for presumed psychiatric problems. Frank left because the staff made him act crazy.

The television series was the only time Frank had psych problems due to Margaret.

The movie, play, and book had his so-called insanity caused by Hawkeye scheming to get rid of him. He wasn't discharged from the army in the television series even though he had a breakdown. The army ironically promoted him and had him in charge of a VA hospital after a week long psychiatric evaluation.
10. How many times did Hawkeye get admitted to the psychiatric ward where Freedman worked?

Answer: 1

Only in the series finale did Hawkeye get admitted when he couldn't operate again. He ended up right back at the M*A*S*H 4077. I don't want to give away what happened, but the chicken is not a chicken.
