Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous French landmark is seen in the opening scene of this episode?

Answer: The Notre Dame Cathedral

The episode opens with a birds eye view of the city, and the cathedral's distinctive shape towers over the other buildings.
2. Who is the formal reception being held for at Monsieur de Treville's castle?

Answer: Dogtanian

Dogtanian arrives to see the Muskahounds getting the Musketeers in order, ready for a formal reception. Dogtanian wants to join them, until he realises it is being held in his honour.
3. What do the Musketeers do while they are cheering?

Answer: Throw their hats in the air

We see dozens of hats thrown in the air repeatedly while the Musketeers cheer Dogtanian. The Muskahounds, however, keep their hats on.
4. How many years does Dogtanian have left before he can become an official member of the Muskateers?

Answer: 3

Dogtanian is disappointed to learn that he is still too young to be a Musketeer. Monsieur de Treville tells him that he can be an honourary member, and if he is good enough he may be allowed to join a year or so early.
5. What is Dogtanian's reward for his heroic actions in the previous episode?

Answer: A walk in the palace gardens

Dogtanian is unimpressed with this prospect, he thinks it will be boring. When he arrives though, he realises how beautiful the gardens are, and that he is lucky to be allowed to see them.
6. What is written above the doors to the King's chambers?

Answer: XIII

This can be seen in decorative gold above the doors on both the inside and the outside of the chamber. It most likely references Louis XIII.
7. What is Monsieur de Treville's excuse for the Muskahounds being caught dueling in the previous episode?

Answer: They were having a private fencing lesson

Monsieur de Treville tells the king that the Muskahounds were practising their fencing, when the Cardinal's guards interrupted them and attacked them.
8. What falls on Dogtanian when he bursts into the private room to see Juliette?

Answer: Underwear

Juliette tells Dogtanian that he can't come into the rooms, but he bursts in anyway. Juliette was in the middle of sorting the ladies' laundry, and Dogtanian knocks the cart, getting buried under a pile of underwear.
9. Monsieur de Treville does not like the thought of the Cardinal's guards protecting the King and the palace. Why is this?

Answer: He thinks they will make the palace like a prison

Monsieur de Treville does not seem to care about his own position, or losing face. He only wants to ensure the Royal Family's safety and comfort, and he doesn't believe that the Cardinal's guard would be suitable.
10. As Dogtanian and the Muskahounds ride to and from the palace, they are all on brown horses. One of the horses has white legs. Who does it belong to?

Answer: Aramis

When they ride into the palace, we can see that one of the horses is not all brown - it has white legs - but we can't see whose it is. When they leave the palace though, we can see quite clearly that it is Aramis' horse.
11. Why does Dogtanian interrupt Monsieur de Treville's speech and orders, and run away?

Answer: He sees Sandy

As Monsieur de Treville is talking, Dogtanian is bored, and starts gazing round the compound. At the gate he sees Sandy being led by a bear, who he later recognises as Planchet, so he runs over to get his horse back.
12. Why had Planchet come to Paris?

Answer: The inn closed down

The inn where Planchet worked had closed down, and the innkeeper gave him Sandy as severence pay. Planchet didn't really have any need for a horse though, and he remembered how much Dogtanian loved Sandy, so he brought him back to him.
13. How many of the Cardinal's guards, not including Widimer, taunt the Muskateer as he tries to cross the bridge?

Answer: 3

The three guards refuse to let the Muskateer pass them, they try to make him crawl through their legs, and generally attempt to humiliate him. While this is happening, Widimer stands at the end of the bridge and laughs.
14. Who does Dogtanian ask to borrow some money from?

Answer: Athos

Athos, Aramis, and Porthos have come to the rescue of the Musketeer, and Athos is crawling on the floor for the guards' amusement in order to avoid breaking the rules Monsieur de Treville set. Dogtanian arrives in the middle of this to borrow money from Athos, and throws the situation into chaos.
15. During the confrontation on the bridge, what does Dogtanian do to Widimer?

Answer: Hits him on the head with a log

The Muskahounds do everything they can to stop Dogtanian from hurting Widimer and breaking the rule, but they are too late.
16. Why is the King amused at Dogtanian's beating the Cardinal's guards?

Answer: Because Dogtanian is so small

The King is angry at first that the two groups fought even after the Cardinal's challenge, but when he realises that the Cardinal's guards were beaten by such a small opponent, he decides that he doesn't want them defending him, and allows the Musketeers to keep their position.
17. How many strokes is Dogtanian sentenced to as punishment?

Answer: 100

Although the King was amused that Dogtanian beat the guards, he still decides to punish him because he broke the rule.
18. Does Dogtanian receive his punishment?

Answer: No

Monsieur de Treville is about to administer the punishment when he is interrupted by the King, and Dogtanian ends up being let off.
19. What does Dogtanian recieve from the King?

Answer: A bag of gold

He also gives him a Royal Pardon, which is how Dogtanian avoids his punishment.
20. At the end of the episode, Dogtanian gives some money to Planchet. Why does he do this?

Answer: To pay him for being his assistant

Planchet becomes Dogtanian's assistant. He pays him with the money he got from the King. Although Planchet knows Dogtanian doesn't have much money, Dogtanian tells him that he will soon be a Musketeer, and will be able to pay him in full.
